Great. Now all the Vampires can come out of hiding and assure us that this is just as good as the real thing so they don't need to feed on us anymore.

Pretty sure this is the plot for True Blood.

They've been able to scrub blood of the antigens that make it type-specific for a long time, but it's a complicated and very expensive procedure.
This artificial blood is made by extracting hemoglobin from donor blood that's expired and can't be administered to a patient, and encasing it in a protective shell. It's stable, and because it has no antigens, it can be given to people with any blood type.
If this blood passes clinical trials, it will save millions of lives.
Oh, it's also purple.

Pretty cool what can happen when you invest in science!

Do they call it TRUE BLOOD

We are born of the blood, made men by the blood, undone by the blood. Our eyes are yet to open. Fear the Old Blood.

A lot of could and would in that article.
KafkasKarma
Is it coconuts? Or coconut based?
Hekatombe
What's it made of this time?
SilverFoxChaser
Pssssh they've been doing that with coconuts for years.
ruint
i think that's just emergency replacement plasma?
if you have a family heirloom blood coconut tree, burn it.
Ionico
Please stop doing the captions like that.
Crimsnfox
I like them, some people like them, you don't. When I see subtitles I don't like I don't say please stop making them I just swipe and go to the next post.
pullingsixty
I'm with Ion on that note. And honestly, you're the first person I've heard say they like subtitles like that.
Crimsnfox
It makes it easier for me to read. They could speed it up 10 times and I'd still be able to read it. I'm cool with being in the minority it makes me special! But honestly every single time there's something with subs like this someone bitches in the comments, like we know you hate them, move on.

This blood won't magically keep you alive if your organs are failing, bud. That's not how blood works.
The main benefits are the increased shelf life, less complicated storage and transport, and universality. This will save millions of lives.

I did not say or even imply that this should not undergo clinical trials, and it's pretty silly for you to pretend that I did.
It is undeniable that this is a huge breakthrough. That does not mean that it should skip the clinical trial process. They've made artificial red blood cells, not artificial blood.
My first reaction at seeing this post was to go find sources and see what kind of data they have available, and not to "laud a breakthrough" or be "hesitant to test".
DoingItWrongSince1980
Well, the good news is that it's so expensive relative to traditional blood that it'll only be used as an alternative to death when regular blood isn't available. But I guess you'd vote to just let those people die for the next 50 years before you consider using it?
And it's still years away from human use anyway, due to the... you know... tests and trials.
I understand your cynicism. There's so much worthy of it especially in the medical space. But don't be universally cynical on all news.
DoingItWrongSince1980
If you really want to be cynical, toy with the fact that this will mostly only save the lives of the wealthy while the poor continue to bleed out in the streets. I guess we should just be glad that they may have an alternative to harvesting the blood of the poor by force.
