I did this a couple hundred feet over the ocean on a Hercules... I was in the 8th grade... My dad took me on a space A flight to Iwo jima. That was a memorable day... Thanks Dad

This looks cool as hell and scary as hell all in one.

He's harnessed in. I used to fly on those planes in that area doing those things.

Hey we all want a great view.

I'm sure the soldier was drafted.

One of the few reasons I miss being in the military is for experiences like this.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Get out of the way! He’s trying to land.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a load that barely got to fly, the best view I ever got was watching a fireworks show from above on the 4 of July in SC with the door open like that. Man I don't miss being in the AF.

I love the prop rotation on the A400M

Guys will look at this and say hell yeah.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I can almost guarantee that person is wearing a safety-harness. No risk of falling out. But you are not wrong, hell yes I would love to sit on that spot and look out.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There is no doubt a monkey tail on them.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He’s clipped in. And it’s not an osprey so ya that’s fine

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

God I miss the military.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As I understand it, you wear a harness clipped to the plane you are in and this becomes the best fucking seat on the planet.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Do the propeller blades actually spin in opposition to each other?

1 year ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Nope just an optical illusion

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 10

They do actually counter rotate, the optical illusion is just them appearing to rotating much slower than they are because of the rate the phone takes pictures

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

I am not 100% sure, but after a quick google it looks like an A400M ATLAS. And it is one of the few multi-engine planes with counter-rotation. https://www.natodays.cz/aircraft/a400m-atlas#:~:text=Among%20the%20specifics%20of%20the,which%20improve%20its%20flight%20characteristics.

1 year ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Hm. It was my impression that they always did this. I see no reason why they wouldn't.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They do. IIRC mostly for added low speed stability and adding some extra lift due to some effect (both prop pairs "shoveling" air under the winds)

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yes, it’s an airbus A400

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

“The advantage of such designs is that counter-rotating propellers balance the effects of torque and P-factor, meaning that such aircraft do not have a critical engine in the case of engine failure.“ - wiki

“The critical engine of a multi-engine fixed-wing aircraft is the engine that, in the event of failure, would most adversely affect the performance or handling abilities of an aircraft.” - wiki

1 year ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Yes. I'm not 100% sure if they spin in the direction they appear to be spinning or the opposite direction (this is one of those camera aliasing effects so it could be either), but they spin like that to compensate the torque of each other.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

They spin the blades going "down between engines." So yea, you're good!

One of the many reasons the Air Force is always the right choice over the others. Ask anyone, they will agree

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Sure beets opening the screen door on the submarine.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah but most don’t get the chance to fly.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Facts, after 10 years of flying I ended up having to leave it behind last year. I don't mind having a ground job, but I sure as shit miss flying.

If China happens I'll be happy to not be on an airplane though. I like breathing.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Holland?

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's certainly flat enough and we do have a bunch of those old starfort shaped cities, but I don't recognize the town.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Airbus A400, I think. In between a C130 and C17 in size and capability. Looks like a bitchin' cargo plane

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's a neat plane but it's hilariously expensive for what it is. It's basically the same price as a C17 with worse performance. C17 is even better at short take off and landing surprisingly. But C17 is cheap because the volume made. These A400s are basically artisanal made.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's too bad. I like the idea of a prop plane in the same vein as the c130. Is there any reason why it couldn't be made in large numbers?

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No customer. Euro countries don't have large enough militaries to fill enough orders. Others already have C17s and C130s.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What do you mean "No thanks"? That's the best seat on the plane (if you don't have a hammock).

1 year ago | Likes 492 Dislikes 0

Training and experience, trust the tech and roll with it.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh no, the best one is the jump seat right next to the cabin door and forward urinal. Good times.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Exactly. You're harnessed & anchored in. As long as you're the one to check your primary & backup attachments.... Meh.

Vaguely reminds me of handsfree rappelling.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I got to ride in a c130 cargo config once. They rigged a net into a kind of long trough along the wall . none of us remember the flight. the vibration and gentle rocking got us sleeping like two minutes after take off. comfiest flight ever.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also most likely tethered and perfectly safe (the rest of his day may not be quite as safe).

1 year ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

"No thanks, I'd rather have healthcare instead of dead people across the world who are no threat to me"

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 7

That's not even an American plane or soldier. Also America already spends more public money (not including insurance premiums and what private individuals pay) than any other nation on healthcare. It's not the military that's the problem. It's how you spend your money on healthcare.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Spending more public money on healthcare doesn't necessarily mean anything when costs are higher than anywhere else. The military industrial complex is its own problem but is also an extension of rich people's agendas who use them to stack international decks to profit from.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes the US Healthcare model is broken. Insurance companies, drug companies and private hospitals artificially drive up costs. You guys need a public system. Like it or not western military strength will be needed to counter increasing Russian and Chinese revanchism and imperialism. It's not military spending preventing better US healthcare, it's the healthcare system itself.

If my high school buddies were in the cockpit I'm certain they'd start pulling air doughnuts though.

1 year ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

You've got a safety lanyard.

1 year ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Only if you remember to attach it... I've worked with people who ignored basic safety...

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Those people don't last as jump masters, or crew chiefs, or anyone else allowed to roam while the plane is in the air. Some Master Sergeant will appear from the fucking ether and obliterate you.

1 year ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

on planes see it takes of whit out the Master sergant or the Crew Chiefs... in the air crew does anything. the Master Sergant Crew Chief shows up from a puff of smoke and starts yelling.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It’s fine, if you fall out, I’m sure the plane behind would catch you.

1 year ago | Likes 223 Dislikes 0

Right in the spinning choppers. Or maybe on the pointy part out front.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He probably wearing a harness, it's required to have a parachute or harness on when in the cargo area with the door open. Although in my c130, the line was aft or flight station 617

1 year ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

That's an A400M so it's likely in a different spot.
