What a surprise. I am shocked as well. Don't forget dumbfounded.

OK, Now put the owner in jail!

Facebook started out as a way for Nark Fuckerburg and his college cronies to keep tabs on classmates they thought were hot. It's always been a data gathering site. Now it's a data collection company and it will never not be a data collection company. Why do people keep trusting these Facebook apps? I wouldn't trust a Facebook app to track my bowel movements let alone periods.

2 weeks ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The apps are getting spidery and talking to each other through the advertising bs

You used to be able to control who got what email and which data, anymore it's a free for all with some scammers info thrown in so shortly all data with be presumed bad

We were warning women not to use this for last few years. No surprise that this private information is being mined for the governments use.

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sadly, any penalty (if there ever is one) will be pennies against the profit they made. And the people they committed the crime against will each get maybe the price of a meal out of it.

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

One of the downright CREEPIEST examples of privacy violation I've heard about, too...

Dear Republicans: Leave women's private data and reproductive rights alone.
Leave LGBTQ people alone.
Live your life by your little 2000+ year old book of fairy tales if you wish.

Fuck off out of other people's lives.

Part of that book tells them that they can't leave other people alone though, they gotta meddle and save some souls and stuff

and now rejoice! both whatsapp and instagram ARE owned by meta, just like facebook.
Now it start a new game: "Guess who mined your data!"

2 weeks ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

How is anyone surprised? Why do people keep using facebook and related junk is incomprehensible to me

2 weeks ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

META’s appeal is a thinly veiled attempted to throw money at this in an effort to set precedent and further erode our right to privacy.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I’ve downloaded the Flo app and have been entering erroneous data for the past few months. I’m a dude. I encourage every man do the same to help protect the women in your life.

2 weeks ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

As a man and a data scientist good idea. Make sure to add some but not too much randomness to throw off their machine learning models. Otherwise they will use something like IsolationForest to detect anomalous data and throw out fake inputs.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Take facebook and instant messengers apps off your phone and only look at that shit on an encryptted browser or using an extension like ghostery. Oh and Meta is trying to use AI to talk to children in overly sexualized and inappropriate ways...so we can see where tracking little girls' menstural cycles and hypersexualizing them go hand in hand. Mark Zuckerberg demands to know your period schedule.

Maybe he just wants his schedule clear so he can be there when you need a douche.

Any app that says they keep your data private are lying. There isn't a single app or website of any kind that keeps your data private. And all should be so heavily fined that they go out of business, and the money that they are fined should be redistributed back to us, the people they stole the data from. Any company using any bit of our data to make money should automatically give us a % of the money they make from doing so. Stealing our data for profit is digital slavery.

2 weeks ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I've actually been working on a free one that does aim to keep data private by storing it only on the user's device - it never gets sent to servers. It's open source and easy enough to run an offline version if you wish. Not sure if I'm allowed to share the link here but, if you'd be willing, I'd really value any feedback - you have the exact same concerns that I had when I started building it.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I would build apps/sites that keep your data private, only problem with that is the second you need to scale, it's game over because ain't nobody paying for a subscription (and I can say that from previous experiences), so it either stays a hobby project, or you get outside investors at which point you've just started your way down the slippery slope of enshittification.

Nyyyeehehhehehe that's the one I was feeding fake data to lol

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I actually remember women foretelling this. This is truly, the darkest timeline. RIP Harambe

2 weeks ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

It's been known for a while, if not confirmed to this scale. For over a year now I've had Flo installed as a single, adult cis male with no periods or pregnancies, along with other users out there, to throw chaff into the system and try to protect the data of the women who still do use this app by spewing out nonsense into the system. I hope it works.

2 weeks ago | Likes 125 Dislikes 1

use it to track when to give your dogs their flea and tick medications

2 weeks ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 0

You should log a regular period then stop for 6 to 8 weeks. Rinse & repeat.

2 weeks ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 0

I basically do it that way, it's just sort of a "pick a regular period schedule when I remember to check the app again"

1 week ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm almost tempted to get the app just for that.

2 weeks ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

The easiest way for guys to do this, is to log when they feel like watching a "chick flick" or doing something "soft" (you might notice a pattern this way that can be helpful to you in making plans)

You can also just pick a monthly moon phase and sort of mimic it with the calendar, start or end it a few days before or after the half, quarter, full or new moon, but remain pretty consistent to that phase, unless you're over 35

2 weeks ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Or a reminder system for something you are supposed to do monthly (like refill meds or visit a friend). Months when you run behind you log it as a “late” month.

2 weeks ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Every time someone tells you they won't use your data, they're going to use your data. Every time. Just like those commercials that tell you you're private communications are private.

2 weeks ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

My job involves access to data, mostly contact info. I protect that information like it's my own. I always get vendors who just want me to hand them user data unfettered and every time I shoot them down. Their "special software" should be usable without a 3rd party getting access to the data I have. I wrote the digital privacy policy and revised it with legal. I'm going to stay true to my word because I've seen the data I can buy from brokers.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What kind of shit-show do you work at? That crap would never fly in a proper professional environment.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Sales people love to talk a big game, and then the true colors come out when you tell them no.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sad to hear, but I guess it’s not that uncommon.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fighting the good fight little by little. Good on you.

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The problem is that nonsense data is easy to screen. If it never follows any pattern, that's the kind of thing that AI is pretty decent at flagging as noise.

A better approach would be to submit patterns that suggest abortions to throw false positives into the data.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I appreciate, but as a data scientist I can tell you that this nonsense is pretty trivial to filter out, though...

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have unfortunately looked into it so it's not 100% nonsense. I do my best to emulate a regular and serious user of the app, that sometimes forgets to use it to track (or chooses not to). It's not going to be 100% effective, and without seeing their exact metrics for abusing it all I can't ever guarantee it will be, but I've put in some work to make sure it's hopefully not that easy to skim.

1 week ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

in that case, kudos to you, sir

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Eh, I appreciate, but who knows how effective it will be. The important part is getting a lot of people involved, or having someone with knowledge and competency to make a new app that isn't pissing data straight into the government.

1 week ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh no, I wonder what will happen to them 🙄

Little alert pops up: "you have synced with your roomies!"

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

I'm picturing the larger scale version of that: you're just out and about walking down the street, and get a push notification every time you pass by someone you're synced with.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And... did they detain the leaders of the company and sent them to the gibbets?

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But if I don't use a period tracking app, how am I supposed to give bad data to assholes who want to control women?

2 weeks ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Yes men needs to download it and feed it bad data

2 weeks ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It amazes me that people use free apps and assign his isn’t happening

Anyone her thing Imgur isn’t selling your data?

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Is anybody REALLY surprised by this? I said this would happen, when I learned of this app (and similar ones). When SCOTUS overturned Roe v Wade, the AG of Texas (Ken Paxton) even talked about requiring the companies that make these apps to provide the data to the state, so he could keep track of who's pregnant, to make sure those women don't have abortions.

Don't EVER put personal information into apps, especially if they can access the internet.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

All those mobile apps are made for collecting data about you, to learn your habits and your routines. Don't make it easier for them, by voluntarily *giving* them data that makes it easier for them to profile you.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The handmaids tale isn't a how to guide, it's an expose. There is nothing in that book that NatCs weren't already planning to do.

2 weeks ago | Likes 403 Dislikes 5

2 weeks ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

That they haven't already *done*. The book is fiction but based on real things that have happened to real people.

2 weeks ago | Likes 60 Dislikes 0

I know it’s fictional, but everything in the book is literally from the plans of the literal nazis taking over the country

2 weeks ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 2

It's wild when people point to dystopian fiction like "OMG they predicted this!" No, they described current conditions and in some cases went on to elaborate on what the natural consequences of those would be.

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

All while being told that they're overreacting or being unrealistic.

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yeah I think it was Jon Stewart who a few months back was telling people not to compare the gov't to fascism or it would be a "boy who cried wolf" scenario. My friend was firmly on his side. I said "fuck no, this is fascism and we just haven't hit the part where people are disappearing". I hate that I was on the right side of the argument.

Something something Torment Nexus?

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

That would only work if the author of The Torment Nexus saw what TechCorp was doing and what it wanted to do and then wrote about how The Torment Nexus was the inevitable conclusion.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can call Republicans Nazis like they actually are them. Because they are. Stop censoring yourself for them. They're all Nazis.

2 weeks ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 5

NatC is specifically referring to christian nationalists. I am not censoring myself.

2 weeks ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Its the same thing. Nazis are Christian Nationalists. Their entire cult of personality and incompetent hatred is founded wholesale in Christian Nationalism.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I disagree, but I'm not here to have a pedantic argument. If you have nothing to say other than complain about my choice of words on a casual forum, find something better to do.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It does a wonderful job of describing how they are both, thank you for introducing me to this term. :)

2 weeks ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Nazis are Christian Nationalists. The first treaty the Nazis ever made was with the Vatican. Their entire ideology revolves around the exact same tenants and superstitions that christian nationalism does. The term for Christian Nationalist is, and will always be, Nazi.

One day I'll get an app to track my cycle but today is NOT the day!

2 weeks ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 2

Canadian here... I used to use Flo... it actually helped me track when to get pregnant. But I'm deleting it today! Wooowww fuck that noise

2 weeks ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

What is a calendar? A miserable pile of secrets?

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I used to use a spreadsheet
My mum drew red dots on the wall calendar

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Honestly, just use a calendar for now. Too many intensely shitty people are in charge of things right now.

2 weeks ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Ive been using one nust to fuck with their system after Texas started their crap about prosecuting women who go to another state for abortion. But im a guy ...

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Brilliant! Keep doing it!

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just get a notebook or paper calendar and some fun stickers in shades of red or pink. Like little angry faces.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Angry uteruses stickers would be great!

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah... the little red dots on my wall calendar are good enough still.

2 weeks ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 0

Yeah that feels enough for me & getting yet another app, opening yet another account sounds too much of a faff to me..

2 weeks ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Much simpler to add a little mark to something i look at every day vs remembering to go somewhere to track it. Im too old school.

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

There's just too many apps now.. Pen on paper is how I still do my notes and calendar entries. Glad I'm not alone in the resistance!

2 weeks ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Is it bad that I feel like you should obfuscate it better?

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Its sad that our instinct is to hide it. But the only reason i even note it is because im not regular and when i go to the doctor for a cut thumb or a cough, and they want to know when my last cycle was... i need help. Lol

2 weeks ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

… did you cut your finger on your cooch?

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Doesnt matter. Its a standard question regarless of emergency. Just like saying there is no chance im pregnant seconds after discussing my tubes being tied for many years. Like IT support - there is a script they follow.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can I get it to fill it up with false info. The first part being that I'm a woman with a uterus. Or would that be weird since I'm actually a 46 yo fat guy?

2 weeks ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Please do it! That sounds like a lot of fun! (I love lying on pointless forms one has to fill in sometimes)

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Make it semi believable or it'll no doubt be filtered.

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I did that for a while. It is a genuinely invasive app though. Constantly pushing for subscriptions and advertising shit. Rather annoying to use.

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Remember, if it doesn't cost anything to use/buy, then you are the product they are selling to make money. The only exception to this is VLC.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

VLC! VLC!

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why not. I've never had a consistent cycle and forget to mark it in my calendar. I should download the app to add inconsistent data

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My wife is on birth control that has pretty much stopped her cycles. She use to get horrible cramps.
