#SHOCKING: Two newborns were allegedly bitten by rats inside the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Indore's prestigious Maharaja Yeshwant Rao Hospital. One of them died of pneumonia on Tuesday.

Officials confirmed that the baby died of pneumonia, reported news agency PTI. The two incidents reportedly occurred in a span of 48 hours, with the first bite on Sunday and the second on Monday.

After the rat attack, the hospital suspended two nursing employees and removed the nursing superintendent from his position. A punishment of 1 lakh has also been issued to a private contractor charged with cleaning the hospital premises.

Earlier, officials said the rats bit a child's fingers and gnawed at another newborn's head and shoulder in the last 48 hours. The incident prompted hospital administrators to launch an investigation.

After the baby girl died, issues were raised with hospital management, but the MYH administration claimed that the infant had various congenital defects and died of a 'pneumonia infection'.
