Staff of the Federal Emergency Management Agency were left baffled on Monday after the head of the U.S. disaster agency said he had not been aware the country has a hurricane season, according to four sources familiar with the situation.
The remark was made during a briefing by David Richardson, who has led FEMA since early May. It was not clear to staff whether he meant it literally, as a joke, or in some other context.

I check https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ almost every morning, esp during hurricane season. Yesterday was the first time I've seen a cyclone formation warning appear off the US coast. Usually we get warnings long before they get this close. Maybe this is a fluke, maybe it's global warming, and maybe it's reduced prediction capacity. It's very hard to be certain but its' extremely disturbing and doesn't bode well for this hurricane season.

Sure, but we'd lose about $3.9 trillion from our GDP, that's about 1/7th of our total annual GDP. If we lost every red county in the US, we still wouldn't lose as much GDP as losing California. It almost seems like Democratic state governments are much more fiscally responsible and foster better working conditions and productivity than Republican state governments.
