Congress voted to terminate this DMSP program in 2015, and replace them with newer systems, like the WSF-M that launched just last year. The NOAA have not yet been given access to these systems by the DoD. Until they gain access, they are without valuable microwave data this hurricane season.
Hurricane season peaks mid-September. If you want to do something, maybe contact your representatives (I know, I know) about pressuring the expedition for the NOAA to access to WSF-M data ASAP.

My mistake, I got my critically-important-satellites-being-shut-down stories mixed up. These satellites don't belong to the DMSP program. These OCO satellites do not have better alternatives available like the DMSP does the WSF-M.
One is a satellite and the other is hosted by the ISS. NASA is pushing to keep the one on the ISS operational. There are also international alternatives like Sentinel, which is already used for things like crop yield forecasting, but they might not be as versatile.

Worse, is that the fossil fuel companies probably aren't agreeable to this, when I worked in the oilfield for a huge company, we used OCO-2 to monitor for oil wells that were giving off less natural gas than normal or to monitor gas flare off values to decide where to put more oil wells. Overall it means that people like Shell and other companies will need to put forward an assload of money to do something they need to do to keep making money, that was free from the government, but is gone now.

Once again, no. 1) Trump gave no such order; he removed funding for maintenance and use from his proposed budget, and that funding may or not be in the finally-passed budget if and when we get one. Eliminating maintenance means its orbit will gradually deteriorate until it burns up. 2) It's obvious why: When it comes to tracking carbon emissions, as with COVID testing, he prefers the head-in-the-sand approach.
