Here are some more videos from the SOI dive yesterday-today. It was a ~24 hour dive and I'm not rawdogging those without sleep anymore. This is a pair of BBQ tongs, *click click*. Or a lobate ctenophore.
Despite being misidentified as an anemone multiple times by different scientists, this is actually some sort of soft coral.
Luke, you've switched off your targeting computer, what's wrong?!
*Bullseyes some womp-cucumbers aggressively*
Another one of those corals with its single giant polyp extended.
One, single, polyp.
Free toupee! I gotta say, SOI must be paying by the zoom or something, the way the camera operator and pilot refuse to do zooms. Very different from Okeanos, which will stop and zoom in max on every. Goddamn. Thing.
Ayy, one of my favs. I would pet so much stuff as a marine biologist, dead within a week.
Wacky waving inflatable arm flailing chode anemone!
Scientists tentatively declared this a blind lobster. BLIND LOBSTER?! Cue B-52's.
Major "I would like to do a science" penguin vibes with this fish.
Launch all missiles! Collect all water samples! Sequence all eDNA!
Sexy siphonophore tax.
I'm not affiliated with the Okeanos, Nautilus Live, ONC, or SOI teams at all, just a fan following along for fun.

Do you want to catch Kharaa cause that's how you catch Kharaa.

Hold on now, the Okeanous Explorer is just mapping this season: “We will not be conducting remotely operated vehicle operations in 2024.” But Nautilus is going to be doing some hardware maintenance on the Canadian underwater observatory starting this week (I think) so that’s fun to watch… ROV operators trying to unplug & plug fiber optic cables on gizmos without getting themselves tied up in knots, wiping grime off sensor windows, techy stuff, in depth, at depth.

I thought Science Penguin Fish was gonna bonk against the machinery.

The fish be like:

At this point you could put literally any bizarre-ass creature in the ocean and I wouldn't be surprised it exists. "Oh, a translucent glowing 10,000 armed scorpion with the face of my dad when he was 10-years-old from a picture I saw once before it was destroyed in a house fire? Why not."

I think those are mostly in the Atlantic

Yup, large floodlights on the ROV!

It's a friend, not an anemone. It's a friend, Coral!

Always wonder. Are those things just blind now?
stoppingsound
I often wondered this too! Did a little internet searchy search - and yes, they are often blinded by the white light used for filming. However, many subs use red light instead since deep see critters can't see/detect it.
ILikeToCallItLostWages
Fuck. That seems very sad even though it's already pitch black down there normally

@op you just want to give them all a little kiss.
