The thrill of finding the movie you want, picking up the empty case off the shelf and taking it to the counter to get the movie. Also, having to plan ahead and get to the store early enough to get one of the 3 copies.

Do not cite the deep magic to me, witch, I was there when it was written.

I remember having a designated VHS rewinder in our home for rentals. After the movie was done we'd pop it in and start the next.

I worked at blockbuster in the late 90's for a few months. Got employee of the month 2x. I still have my enamel pins, lol. It wasn't the worst gig.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was so good. Video Netto on Denmark. Core memories.

The smell, man. I miss the smell. Blockbuster was a whole ass experience.

She looks like my mama 😭

We got our rentals at Smitty's (AZ grocery chain that was like Super Walmart 20 years before Walmarr opened their first store in AZ) or The Wherehouse. My first introduction to Star Wars was rentals of the Ewoks and Droids cartoon recut as movies around 1992. Also rented a few Sega Genesis games until one of my friends borrowed Rocket Knight Adventure then never turned it back in. We got banned until we "bought" the game at $80.

All Blockbuster had to do was buy Netflix for 50 million… but they were to arrogant

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

People probably thought this was a silly thing to do but it was such a normal part of life it didn't make sense to record it back then. This is nice

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I still occasionally dream that my local Blockbuster has suddenly come back and looks the same way it did back in the 90's. I'm so excited and so happy to be walking through it again... which makes waking up such a crushing experience.

Anyone else remember the smell of their Blockbuster?

better copy, longer, and no music added over top https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFNfVDQdMxs

I really dislike the music that’s played over all the nostalgia anymore. Thank you.

2 weeks ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

But it hits I think

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

I preferred the local store with the room with the beads for a door

2 weeks ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

That was where they kept the porn...

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I worked at a Blockbuster when I was 17, and holy crap does this take me back. I can practically smell it.

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I went into a local store a few days ago and commented that I remember when it used to be a video rental place. That must be at least thirty years ago. I think maybe it survived long enough to move from VHS to DVD, but only just.

Is that the water level music from Donkey Kong Country

2 weeks ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 1

It is, but it isn't. It's a remix, I think.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Either that or Eco the Dolphin. Not sure.

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

same sound plus some similar melody, combined with what sounds like music from a star trek TNG episode

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was gonna say!

2 weeks ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I think so ! That's fucking nostalgic !

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Gods I remember this. I was so annoyed at the shelves of cases with nothing behind them. Why have the picture and not the tape?

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

but finding the last copy of a new release on a Fri night!!!! Like winning the lotto

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Blockbuster died for a reason - they had a chance to adapt, and they chose to double down; I do not mourn them.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

they did have a dvd mail service like early netflix but I'm guessing it flopped

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, pay at one counter, pick up at exit counter.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had that bugs taz shirt!

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I may wax nostalgic about some of the early 90's (especially the music), but the hair and fashion can mostly stay in the 90s

2 weeks ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 1

We had hair and clothing fashion in the 90s?

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

We had hair and clothes.

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The fashion industry has completely run out of ideas, so expect it to happen soon. Give it another decade and we'll be right back to millennial fashion as the ouroboros finally chokes to death on its tail.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The 80s were so bad, and a lot of it tended to carry over. I can do without the giant fluff, and bangs, and perm curls, forever.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And bowl cuts. Holy shit

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

BUT the sideswipe loose hair was the shit, or even middle-part hangs-to-the-sides stuff. That was good times

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A decade's defining style tends to peak around a year or two into the next. I, too, can do without the giant hair and poofy bangs forever.

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

C'mon gecko Hawaii shirts were peak fashion

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Are you telling me the random blue shirt with a gecko in sunglasses on it I had when I was 8 wasn't random? Those were a thing?

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And the shirt that changed colors was indeed a thing and cool as all hell

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Back when we all left our homes!

People using abundant AI freely, cheaply, without ads. Well look back at this and complain just the same way we complain about YouTube today, and think back to when youtube didn't have a single ad. Or when the two streaming services were cheaper than cable and all anyone ever needed.
