The thrill of finding the movie you want, picking up the empty case off the shelf and taking it to the counter to get the movie. Also, having to plan ahead and get to the store early enough to get one of the 3 copies.
We got our rentals at Smitty's (AZ grocery chain that was like Super Walmart 20 years before Walmarr opened their first store in AZ) or The Wherehouse. My first introduction to Star Wars was rentals of the Ewoks and Droids cartoon recut as movies around 1992. Also rented a few Sega Genesis games until one of my friends borrowed Rocket Knight Adventure then never turned it back in. We got banned until we "bought" the game at $80.
I still occasionally dream that my local Blockbuster has suddenly come back and looks the same way it did back in the 90's. I'm so excited and so happy to be walking through it again... which makes waking up such a crushing experience.
I went into a local store a few days ago and commented that I remember when it used to be a video rental place. That must be at least thirty years ago. I think maybe it survived long enough to move from VHS to DVD, but only just.
The fashion industry has completely run out of ideas, so expect it to happen soon. Give it another decade and we'll be right back to millennial fashion as the ouroboros finally chokes to death on its tail.
People using abundant AI freely, cheaply, without ads. Well look back at this and complain just the same way we complain about YouTube today, and think back to when youtube didn't have a single ad. Or when the two streaming services were cheaper than cable and all anyone ever needed.

I remember having a designated VHS rewinder in our home for rentals. After the movie was done we'd pop it in and start the next.

I worked at blockbuster in the late 90's for a few months. Got employee of the month 2x. I still have my enamel pins, lol. It wasn't the worst gig.

All Blockbuster had to do was buy Netflix for 50 million… but they were to arrogant
hwatL4bloopy
People probably thought this was a silly thing to do but it was such a normal part of life it didn't make sense to record it back then. This is nice

Blockbuster died for a reason - they had a chance to adapt, and they chose to double down; I do not mourn them.
MastersDegreeInTomfoolery
they did have a dvd mail service like early netflix but I'm guessing it flopped

I may wax nostalgic about some of the early 90's (especially the music), but the hair and fashion can mostly stay in the 90s

Feralkyn
The 80s were so bad, and a lot of it tended to carry over. I can do without the giant fluff, and bangs, and perm curls, forever.
Feralkyn
And bowl cuts. Holy shit
Feralkyn
BUT the sideswipe loose hair was the shit, or even middle-part hangs-to-the-sides stuff. That was good times
phalanxausage
A decade's defining style tends to peak around a year or two into the next. I, too, can do without the giant hair and poofy bangs forever.
UnoriginalPieceOfRepeatingShit
C'mon gecko Hawaii shirts were peak fashion
Equinox13
Are you telling me the random blue shirt with a gecko in sunglasses on it I had when I was 8 wasn't random? Those were a thing?
