Fortunately there was an opening at Sainsburys after I was laid off from Waitrose. Circle of life

It took me more time than I’d like to admit trying to figure out what trollies were. But hey I never graduate from college. :/

And now you have $30k in debt on top of being poor. Yay!

The land of Trollies knows not of this.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Student loans are more like a 'graduate tax' in the UK. You pay a percentage of earnings and dont pay if unemployed/earning less than 25k

4 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Its 27500 per year which is down from the 30k of a few years ago but its still good

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So exactly like most student loans in America then.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Not necessarily. I earn around 28k, pay £50 per month and the remaining debt is cancelled after 30 years if not paid back.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

30k? Must be nice living under the crown...

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Maybe it's not too late to go back to a monarchy

Me too

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I busted my ass for 6 years in food service. COVID hit, got unemployment and applied to an electrician helper position. They gave me a shot

4 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

I’m so glad to hear good news in job opportunities right now. Any encouragement we can get is priceless.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And now I’m on my way to being in the apprenticeship program. I’m still busting my ass but I love every second of it

4 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

You’re gonna do great! Just always show up on time ready to work and learn. If you show genuine interest in learning, someone will teach. GL

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wish you good fortune. All the cool toys and tools in the world mean nothing without competent folks keeping the electricity flowing.

4th year apprentice here, best decision I've ever made. And I'll have no debt when I get out and be making $46K/year minimum.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

IBEW journeyman pay scale is like $100K/yr in Chicago. Where do you live?

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Started from the bottom, now we're here

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I have a degree from the university of Sheffield , I slap labels on boxes

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Context is important, especially to our none UK friends. Waitrose is considered to be the "clasiest shop" above sainsburrys

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Is he in an elevator?

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

No he's on a lift

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Often the supermarkets are on the upper floor of the building, with parking or loading bay/warehouse on the ground floor.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

So many people are getting this wrong. Booths, Waitrose, Sainsbury's/Morrisons/co-op, Tesco, ASDA, Aldi/Lidl, Iceland, bins, heron foods

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

mate you're being a little harsh on the bins, they are better than iceland, as at least the food is somewhat edible.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When I first read this I thought you were taking the piss and suggesting literally shopping from waste bins and fighting birds for food.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think Heron Foods was absorbed by BnM. The one near me was anyway.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Preach. It’s time Booths expanded and took over the rest of England and Scotland. We need something to hope for in these dark times.

Before school he had no debt so really he is worse off at the moment.

4 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 0

Hopefully he got more out of school than a piece of paper that says "pay me more." but that depends on the student.

Stephen Fry: 'I love Sainsbury's. It keeps the riffraff out of Waitrose.'

4 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 0

It's an uphill battle. You're slightly higher, but still on the ground.

I presumed it was ever so slightly higher on the grocery chain.

Marks & Spencer > Waitrose > Sainsbury’s > Tesco > Morrison’s > Asda > Lidl > Aldi

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

This order is all fucked. Booths > Waitrose > M&S > Sainsbury's > Aldi > Morrison's = Tesco > Asda > Lidl

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would put those 8 into 4 pairs - M&S/Waitrose always exceeds Sainsbury's/Tesco (and so forth) with the better of the two...

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

...being location dependent. So a shithouse Sainsbury's to a great Waitrose could be a big step up the UK supermarket ladder

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Was in England a couple years back on holiday. The local supermarket was a Sainsbury's, so I don't have a frame of reference for its status

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Waitrose is the posh one. Sainsbury's is not so posh, but you shop there if you don't want to be seen in Asda/Tesco.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

But you put all your shopping in your marks and Spencer’s bag.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I know of Tesco and Asda, what's the chain of command for fancy to low rent?

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I haven't got a clue, and I was mostly implying that if there WAS any upward movement, it was minimal at best.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Waitrose is expensive and posh. Sainsbury's is mid-low tier. Aldi and lidl are bargain (affordable)

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There's an Asda in Wycombe that we affectionately refer to as "the gates of hell". If you shop in clothes, you're too classy to go in.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

When I lived in Hereford (briefly) ASDA was considered hoity-toity. Just shows it's all relative.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As opposed to pyjamas or trackies, I mean. I've not seen anyone naked. Although it wouldn't surprise me.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

From lowest to highest: Asda, Tesco's, Sainsburys, Waitrose, Marks&Spencer.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

You missed out Morrisons at 2

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Agreed on 1-3 but Waitrose is better than M+S, which is just old people ready meals. Booths is god tier, miles ahead of both.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No missed a few out, Heron, iceland, Aldi, Lidl, Asda, Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsburys, M&S, Waitrose. Swap Booths in if you are from up north

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Lidl & Aldi are a class of their own. Somehow both better & worse than the rest. Where you can buy veg, beer and chainsaws in the same aisle

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a me from Kentucky.........

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oooh - I'd place Aldi above Lidl...

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'd place them both above Asda personally.

Yep, I left my 16$/hr job as a glorified receptionist to get a master's degree in Chinese studies and now I'm a phone operator. 90k debt

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Would if I could, but there just aren't any right now

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Government. There were tons of jobs when I was in school, then once I graduated, they were gone

Chinese phones?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

People don’t use their degrees. It’s just third party verification that you can complete something.

4 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 2

Depends on the degree. Engineering degree always in demand

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I use my engineering degree every day !

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I use mine but it's accounting and I was taught very little accounting before college. Probably half of my coworkers don't use their degrees

4 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I would say that I use my degree as it is by law I have to have one to be a licensed practicing veterinarian

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Nice! My husband is in vet school now. I admire the profession greatly!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Agreed, if it’s not an advanced STEM degree, I feel like you don’t typically use them. It just mostly verifies your abilities and intellect.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nah mate, they just think they're a better class of customer. And it shows.

4 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 2

I worked there and once had the child of an Eastender's actress vomit all over a trolley and all the oranges and lemons

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I have worked for Waitrose for 11 years. You don't. You get people who believe they are a better class but are actually arseholes.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was thinking "No you don't, I always shop at Sainsbury's and never Waitrose" then I realised. I'm the scum.

I love Booths! Are they like only in Lancashire and the Lake District?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Manchester and Cheshire as well

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They used to have an agreement w Waitrose - north and south buying together for stronger bargaining. Booths has stayed north - for now.
