A haunting historic photograph from 1905 captures the face of a man scarred by smallpox. Once one of history's deadliest diseases, smallpox blinded, scarred, and killed millions before a global vaccination campaign led to its eradication in 1980.

Smallpox, one of history’s deadliest diseases, likely emerged 12,000 years ago. Evidence is found on Egyptian mummies, including Pharaoh Ramses V. It ravaged humanity for centuries, striking figures like Queen Elizabeth I and Abraham Lincoln. With fevers, painful pustules, and a mortality rate up to 30%, it killed hundreds of millions—300 million in the 20th century alone. A global WHO vaccination campaign ended its terror: the last natural case appeared in 1977, and in 1980 smallpox was declared eradicated.

Smallpox, one of humanity’s deadliest diseases, likely emerged 12,000 years ago. Traces have even been found on Egyptian mummies, including Pharaoh Ramses V, whose remains bore the signature lesions. For centuries it swept across continents, sparing no class affecting figures like Queen Elizabeth I and Abraham Lincoln, who reportedly fell ill in the White House. Highly contagious, it caused fever, painful pustules, and left survivors scarred. With a mortality rate up to 30%, it killed hundreds of millions, including 300 million in the 20th century alone. Its rapid spread made it universally feared. In the mid-20th century, the WHO launched a massive vaccination campaign, and by 1977 the last natural case appeared in Somalia. A year later, Janet Parker, a medical photographer in the UK, became the last victim after accidental lab exposure. In 1980, smallpox was declared eradicated—the first disease eliminated by human effort, a milestone in global health.

Ya know, with a little foundation and some blush , it’ll even out nicely and no one will notice.

Its eradication? Don't you mean its temporary suspension?

Obviously smallpox is a horrid disease. But i do think its pretty weird that the recollloured picture has the the scabs and dried blood black. It makes it look like his face is rotten its bad but but not THAT vad

Is he going to be ok?

I wish they would outlaw this sort of "colorization".

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 14

Outlaw it? That’s extreme. Colorization doesn’t erase history—it adds another way to see it. The originals are always preserved. If it’s not your taste, that’s fine, but many people value this perspective.

While no longer a natural threat, the potential for deliberate release as a biological weapon remains, leading public health organizations to maintain vaccine stockpiles and preparedness plans. Would Trmp use it as a weapon? You betcha.

I’m just afraid there’s hidden specimens for the virus and cunts like trump would consider using it to other countries or even their own country

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 10

It isn't hidden. It is pretty well known at least in the USA, they have samples of stuff like this.

There's a reason biological warfare is a BIG no no. Unfortunately, we have maniacs who would gladly ignore that in charge

Do you think the CDC would be able to do anything if the US or USSR viral stores were to get out?

1 month ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 2

Sure, like, they could bomb Greece.

CDC is dead d/t to an orange virus

Ideally. We still have the vaccine. And actually are using it now for monkeypox. There is still strength in men.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They still know how to make the vaccine for it, which only stopped in many areas within the past 50 or 60 years. Most people older than that are already vaccinated, and much of the world has just shown how rapidly a newly available vaccine can be rolled out. Even many of the red caps would get on board once a few of their sister cousins started dying horribly. Smallpox isn't exactly as subtle or friendly as COVID19.

I believe the vaccine is still produced and is mandatory for some professions (mainly military)... That said, during the height of the plague time political insanity, I heard reports of our smallpox vaccine stores going from limit production to near decimation.

When you add the fact that rfkjr can be directly attributed to hundreds of deaths after a campaign to eradicate the Measles vaccine in Guam... I'm not sure he would care so much. Just need to make sure you pray and buy his supplements

I'm gonna just throw it out here to say that the US is only a significant population size in the statistical sense and that, for now, much of the other 96% of the world's population has leadership more amenable to science.

If smallpox was to somehow re-emerge I think we're toast. Like this poor bastard. To many vaccine sceptic fucktards out in the world today.

1 month ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 3

Not to mention, if someone evil really wanted to, it wouldn't be hard to generate a recombinant pox virus either. All the genetic info is out there.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think you're wrong. Smallpox is very visible, and very virulent - if people tried to prevent vaccination for it they'd be torn limb from limb. It's only because vaccines et al have been so effective that theres room for fucktards to cash in on lying 'skepticism'. When the diseases come back the bullshit scepticism will disappear, but too late for most of one generation. Evolution in action.

Like shit, people think its cool to roll the dice and drink raw contaminated as fuck milk. They all like hey remember when food would kill ya? Yeah lets do that again!

My brain somehow skipped the "RAW" part first and it spooked me a moment, having just recently polished off another gallon. Went and looked it up before coming back. Yeah its raw milk, meant for animal consumption. The state posted as having the issue is Florida...which is less surprising to me than i wish it was.

I'm cool with people killing themselves from listening to stupid ideas instead of scientists but I draw the line at impacting other people.
