He knows it won't matter. The photo will be used without context eventually. It'll become a file photo used for whatever. And he knows that if he always looks like everything is fine and dandy, that's what his sycophants respond to. He never looks sad, so everything must be ok. It's the same reason he waves at crowds that aren't there. If his picture is being taken, he needs to look the part. It's ghoulish and callous, but also part of a strict media strategy.

I mean, yes, in one sense, ignorance is bliss. But given his intense distrust of everyone—and the completely one-side relationship his cultists have with him—I suspect it's mostly just 24/7 stress and bitterness for him, and he rarely ever gets to ENJOY any of that bliss.
Which I'm perfectly fine with, as he doesn't deserve any such reprieve, but I don't think that his is actually a state we would want to envy.

That's one of the main reasons he loves his rallies and such, and why the ONLY time we ever saw a photo of him legitimately sad during his first term was when a rally didn't go well for him.
My belief is that Trump doesn't really covet money and power, so much as he craves ADORATION. He NEEDS people constantly chanting his name, validating how "great" he is, and damn near worshiping him like a god. He just thinks that being rich and powerful is the best, fastest way to GET that adoration.
