Holy crap IMDB lists it as having a lower score than Mortal Kombat: Annihilation...which was apparently his first movie before Phantom Menace. So it must be REALLY bad.
hahah, young people....in the original Return of the Jedi, I saw Palpatine die, Bobba Fett swallowed by the Sarlacc pit, and I also saw old Anakin force ghost. Nothing is canon.
Yeah, no. The fact that the piercing is still shiny once all the make-up is applied means that the make-up people either a) worked around it or b) cleaned it after make-up was applied. If Ray Park "forgot" to remove it, everyone preparing him thought, "No, let's keep it."
Was Maul supposed to be a human that the dark side changed somehow to look like a cheap tattoo from the nineties, or is he an alien with clearly human features? Cos either way the concept is terrible.
It’s probably more “he’s got one because ray parks has one” more than “whoops. He forgot. And then the makeup crew cleaned it up after applying makeup for hours and totes forgot to take it out too.”
Yes, cartilage piercings can take over a year to fully heal, during which time you should keep high-quality jewelry (usually titanium) in place, as the piercing can close in just a few hours. Even once healed, the piercing can close in a few days for some people.
First guess: Whomever started foundation saw the piercing and thought "Must be part of the character. Could be the actor, could be director, could be producer, don't matter none to me, I'll pain around it."
I think they would of had to remove it and put it back to paint his ear and not paint the stud. Likely hand waived as "space fantasy stuff" and was simply ok'd. I never really noticed it before though, that's neat he got to "leave it in" so to speak
Not over the entire filming process, but for the initial screen test that sets the character's look in stone? Sure, it's possible. Lookbooks get set in stone while all sorts of things are still in flux and then the (post)production team has to make those things happen.
Yeah, you are right: someone had to make the choice to keep it. But that means at some point, that piercing made its way further into developing the look of the character than anyone intended.
It kind of has a "Is this worth changing" at every single step and no one batted an eye. I think the implication of it being a mistake they WANTED changed shouldn't be a strong conclusion. With how many facial prosthesis star wars uses you could argue "Darth maul could have had no ears, but they let it go way further into developing than anyone intended" but it was kind of accepted from the start. How to put it a different way... Lets say a character was designed to wear a certain piece of 1/?

And this is how "canon" is made.

OP, you are incorrect.
Ifekinlovesauerkraut
Yeah, nah.
Matty3D
He was the fighting double for James Remar in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Which was also his first film role.
EricPisch
A truly great character in the SW universe
Ebo352
Or, they saw it and it worked for them.
WeMistbornsNeedNotMakeSense
Make-up people: Well this fits his charater so lets keep it.
and did not tell him
davidsomoza
Sometimes i forgot he was also on that bad "king of fighters" movie as Rugal.
TheGlow
It must have truly been bad as I didnt know they made one.

Ray park canonically is an awesome down to earth dude , and great fun at conventions.
AdrianDunne
It took effort to paint around and underneath that piercing without getting any black on it so I don't believe that they just missed it.

Ray Park ^ dumb story lies v

He's a Zabrak from Dathomir. One of many near human species.

Sounds cool but not true.

Aren't you supposed to leave a cartilage piercing in? Am I wrong?

Hair and make-up and principal photography also missed it. You'd think hair and make-up would have spotted it.
amglasgow
More likely they just said, "hey, that looks cool, keep it in"
WilliamWeird
Makeup: it was hair's job

Hair:
IAmDrBanner
They most likely spotted it and thought it was part of the costume or it was allowed by another team, assuming this is true.

This is the most likely answer. Glad you commented

*paint around it. Sorry, channeling the makeup artist's ennui having to paint a dude for 4 hours AGAIN.
norcebyl
There's no makeup on the piercing. They either carefully painted around itl or took it out and put it back in.
banjostrings
I wouldn’t think that.

Maybe forgot during testing make up and they decided they liked it?

You think during 4 hours of make-up daily they just "missed" it?

This is a major role in a hundred million dollar production. They may have decided to let him keep it in, but it wasn't just "missed".
