thing is, he's saying that because a secular, pluralistic democracy is exactly how we got christian nationalism here... Not that it inevitably leads to that, but that most people understand as a basic human right rather than as a social contract. And when that happens, bad actors can wedge their brand of fascism in edge wise and grow their base until... *gestures in the general direction of Washington DC today* that happens

All I can say is the rest of the world didn't do anything to deserve the fallout from this.
Every time the yanks stumble in to some place that they have no reason to fuck around with the rest of us deal with the shit.

The same picture as this?
Because, of course, the Mahdi can't return until Israel is utterly destroyed as he believed, heart and soul...

Not all theocracies are equally cuckoo and the USA is *miles* away from the mentalities observed even in "intolerant" supermajority Christian countries of which there are a few examples (in Africa, for example).

@NewtGingrich is right. Same for the USA.

People: Why are you atheist?

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Because they wish to follow the shining examples of athiest states such as Cambodia under the rule of that famous pacifist, Pol Pot?

The point you're trying to make is easy to overturn by many examples from recent historical reality and that old "absolute power corrupts absolutely" dictum.

Oddly enough, Iran had one of those until the UK and the US decided they shouldn't.

3 months ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Bernie's claim is incorrect. And I wish more people who reflexively go "USA bad", "UK bad", etc., would research deeper even where that *is* a correct generalisation!

Mosaddegh stopped the vote counting when it was apparent that rural areas would be against him, demanded increased powers from the Shah, ruled through "dictatorial decree" and demanded those be extended.

That he was a *popular* (populist) leader is not the same as saying his country was a secular, pluralistic democracy.

Look up Gay rights in Iran......now shut the fuck up and stop making comparisons to a theocratic government that being gay is punishable by death. The amount of leftists rushing to defend Iran's government is sickening. The Iranian people don't deserve to die but their entire government could be eradicated and I wouldn't so much as bat an eye

All religion is poison, a strange woman lying in a pond distributing swords would be a better basis for system of government than religion

Is that what you got from this?

There's no death penalty for adultery, homosexuality, and many more supposed offenses in a "Christian nation".

One created an entirely new book to better lean into modern sensibilities and not come off as dogmatic. The other throws gay people off roofs and just called a law that banned underage marriage as "un-islamic". Not saying Christianity is squeaky clean but hey, rather be here than there

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 11

The other also kills gays for fun, so what's your point again?

3 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That here if you commit violence against a gay person, your probably gonna get ostracized by the greater christian community save for the whack jobs like Westboro. You also have a choice of not being Christian if you want. Mean while in the Islamic countries across the pond. If your gay you get ostracized by your community as "Non-Muslim" and then tossed off a roof. You also don't really have a choice to be any other religion, you can try but they'll probably slap you with Blasphemy laws.

It’s been 2000 years, not so modern anymore is it.

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

On the contrary it shows a great deal of foresight that even back then Christianity understood it would need to be flexible with its views and adjust with the times. Mean while the Fundamentalist majority of Islam consistently fight to avoid conforming to modern cultural norms, most notably demanding that their antiquated Sharia Law and Blasphemy Laws be implemented where ever they migrate to

the quran is more "modern" than the bible.

3 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Well, parts of it is the same and the other parts are six or seven hundred years newer. Dunno if that makes it more modern though, they are both well past their “best before”-date.

Sometimes I appreciate the fact that I was raised with a catholic education. Nothing will show you grift and hypocrisy sooner. I've never believed in God. The concept was silly to me. Then I saw bingo nights and color coded donation envelopes they sent out for "collection". The whole "10% thing" The church literally drills into you that 10% of whatever you get is theirs. you find a quarter on the street? we get 2.5 cents. Just about everything you see is a scam.

When I was small, my father would send me to church with my grandma, so he didn't have to. I will say he never pushed religion, just occupy grandma. Grandma, on the other hand, made many mistakes, but the first and largest was trying to play make-believe with an autist. Told me god was in the sacristy, so during communion, I bolted and went to go have a word. Alas, no god. I did get an appreciation for the organ and architecture out of it.

The instrument if you need clarification.

3 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Growing up, I always appreciated how quiet and peaceful the Catholic churches were. Real sense of reverence. But yeah it's all horseshit. Yes it's 10% they want, but especially with Protestants (which I was involved with in college) they need also your performance for their game. Otherwise the fact that I've fostered 2 kids and have done more for children than any god has done is part of my lack of confidence in that grift.

There was seriously a "tithe" discussion in first grade. I asked, what do I do If I find a penny? "save the pennies you find until you get 10 and then give the church one" - Sister Mary Slyvia

I acknowledge that most Americans are Christian, and as a Christian that makes me happy. BUT WE SHOULD NEVER CALL OURSELVES OFFICIALLY A CHRISTIAN NATION. That's God's call.

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 18

There have been 40,000 distinct denominations of Christianity, and there are hundreds in America today.

Now you come along, pretending that they're all the same.

The KKK and Westboro Baptists are just as Christian as you are, bud.

I'll say it again, because I dont think you heard me the first time.

Religion is poison.

Yes, that includes yours.

3 months ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

The best argument against religion is that all religious people are part of a tiny minority that claims everybody else is wrong, and that their own version of their religion is not old at all.

3 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Yup, I love the quote about the different between a believer and an atheist is that the atheist disbelieve one more religion than the believers

One of my favorite stories is about the Harvard School of Divinity, a PhD program that turns devout Christians, Jews and Muslims into atheists... because it teaches them ancient Latin, Greek, Aramaic, Hebrew and Arabic (which is basically easy once you know Hebrew/Aramaic) and has them read the source documents and the narratives written concurrently to basically prove it is all made up (oddly that is not Harvard's intent, just the effect).

Ah but Jesus did not come to strike down the law, but fulfill it. So those rules still apply. Jesus said to love God, then said love others. So, obviously, God takes priority. God has also commanded genocide. Sure the cattle and infants in that genocide were evil as well, so they were included.
Saying Jesus struck down the rules is a little too simplistic and ignores biblical problems.

There are more than 600 commandments, and there are three different sets of the 10 commandments.

Christians pick out the bits that align with their personal ideas of morality, and either creatively interpret or outright ignore the rest.

For the most part, no, Christians dont actually read the bible. Most of them just have some church leader read a verse or two out of context and then talk about what they think it means.

I read the entire bible, and that's why I could never be a Christian.
