Pippin loudly proclaiming himself is exactly the kind of energy we all should learn from. What incredible self-confidence.

#12 Jim Butcher had been progressing along the evil axis for a while now, but I swear to god, if he dies before completing Dresden, I will resurrect him and beat his ass until he finishes...

2 months ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 0

Really putting the romance back into necromancer I see

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Butcher is following in Scott Lynch's footsteps, it seems. But that's still better than Patrick fucking Rothfuss. At least Butcher and Lynch had legit fuckery happening in their lives. Rothfuss has no such excuse.

I just started reading these and I'm loving them so far! I hope he finishes them too!

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

IIRC, he was going through a divorce and the peeps he hired to build his house came to a complete stall, and were trying to rake him for more money or somethin'. so he had no output for a bit.

2 months ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

yeah, as i heard it, it took the wind out of his sales for a bit.

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

His beloved dog also died in the midst of all that. BUT Book 18 is drafted and with the editors as we speak!

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Awww. that's always rough. But glad to hear he's on track. The ending twist of battle ground was pretty cool. who would guess that [DATA EXPUNGED] would [DATA EXPUNGED}? I know right?

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

His Son has put out a few books recently, and they're kinda fun. A little slapstick-y at times, but an interesting magic system in play.

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna be finished with the Dresden Files before he is. Like, after the last one I read I'm not sure I want to go back.

2 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Honestly? Same.

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

For me it's the last two, since they came out pretty much together and had the same vibe. Reminded me of "Mostly Harmless" by Douglas Adams. The same feeling of "I really don't like writing this anymore", although not to the same degree. I'm waiting to see if the next one is better.

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Give his son a read. James Butcher. He has one trilogy out so far. I might like him more than his father

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Already read it and loved it. I confess I was skeptical when I heard about him, but his work didn't disappoint. Waiting for more, since it's clear he's not done with the series yet.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think he's fallen out of love with the Dresden Files and would rather be writing anything else. The gap between novels just keeps increasing, and hes trying to pitch other series to his publisher. He's also sold the series to Amazon I think. I hope he keeps some creative control or we'll get another Halo/Wheel of Time/Witcher fiasco

2 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I don't think he's ever been very fond of the series.

Before his breakthrough he was attending a creative writing class and his teacher gave him constructive criticism for his style and suggested he tried something different. He took youthful offense to that and decided to write exactly like his teacher told him to, just to show them that they were wrong, and the first Dresden Files was the result of that.

Oh, man, Wheel of Time. I wish I knew if the ending was Jordan's fault or Sanderson's. Soooo disappointing. Not all 3 books, not even the whole last book, just the way Rand dealt with the Dark One and the Demandred fiasco. Other than that, Sanderson did a decent job, although it was clear he didn't grok some of the characters, especially Matt.

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I agree that the ending was a bit underwhelming but my general feeling was that Sanderson wrote the characters like people (albeit in Matt's case, silly people) rather than two adjectives in a coat.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's why I think Sanderson mishandled Matt, because Matt was one of the few characters -- perhaps the only one -- that wasn't just two adjectives in a coat. But again, that's not something that bothered me too much. The confrontation with the Dark One was the biggest letdown, and I don't even know if we can blame Sanderson for that, because it might have been something Jordan set in stone before he died.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was generally satisfied with the ending. Though i wish Androl screen time had been given to Logain instead. And yeah Matt never sounded quite right which Sanderson has admitted to.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Spoiler warning for anyone who hasn't read it! Spoilers in the replies.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What I didn't like about the ending was the whole "if you destroy the Dark One, you destroy free will". Throughout the whole series, Jordan hammered one point over and over and over: the Dark One is not the source of all evil, just the supernatural BBEG. That's why there's a difference between the Children of the Light and the Darkfriends, that's why Rand could neutralize the taint using Shadar Logoth, etc. I could get over everything else, even Demandred, but that was really lame.

Drizzy. the original edgelord D&D wolverine invincible badass that *everyone* had a version of. "yeah, I'm play a brooding edge dark elf ranger. but it's totally not drizzt." - everybody

2 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Don't totally disagree but still my favorite lawful evil. I enjoy fantasy books and the more books in the series the better.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was tickled pink the first time I read his books. I was (am) a pretty big D&D nerd and having a novel that had D&D stuff in it gave it a sort of legitimacy that it really needed at the time. Eventually it was normalized but at the time it was like "oooh! I know what that monster is!" and wondering what level drizzt and the matron mothers were was fun. :)

Do they get better later on? Found the first ~10 in storage and been re-reading them recently and found them... not very good. It's a grand epic and all, but most characters are shallow, environments are poorly described and there's frequent bad consistency ("crippling" injuries are instantly forgotten).

He's decent at fight sequences, I'll grant him.

Elaine Cunningham did a much better job at depicting "drow-goes-surface" in Starlight & Shadows, even as she credited Salvatore for his help.

Reread entire series in order 2 years ago including companion series(Cleric Quintet, Sellswords and War of the Spider Queen) I really enjoyed in as a whole but there are definitely high an low points. 54 books at my last count although he has published at least 2 I haven't read yet. Yes also enjoyed her series.

Disclaimer: I read 2-3 novels per week on average so in my opinion a book is good if I want to finish reading it and read the next one in the series.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Asking me to re-read books I have not read on top of not actually answering the question of whether they get better seems like extremely strange advice.

If you want people to understand you, please format your comment replies in such a way that a normal human being can read them, not like a stream of consciousness poem from the 1980s.

Sure, I can read fast too if I absolutely want to (3 novels per week is fast now? lol). Not sure what that has to do with anything.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Huh, interesting reply. If you dont like the way I choose to convey myself or my advice don't take it.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

You responded to a specific query with unusable advice. You're like a person standing next to a petrol pump telling someone they should be running their car with wind power instead.
