To be fair, I actually kinda agree with this one. Confessing crimes to a psychologist, lawyer, or religious guide allows the criminal to get guidance. They're still a piece of shit, but a guided piece of shit is better than an unguided piece of shit. I want justice, but above that, I want goodness, kindness, reform. If someone manages to evade the law, gets help, and stops hurting children, that's better than nothing, and I'd trade 2 people getting fixed vs 1 thrown in jail.

Also note, it doesn't say they can't report it, if they feel they need to, if they feel the crime needs the attention of the judicial system, if the child is the one that comes to them, or if they feel other children are in danger. It just says they aren't in legal trouble for keeping a confession between themselves and the confessor, which is a pretty important part of their job.

Marrying a girl of 12 1/2 was not at all unusual, as long as she had menstruated and grown some pubic hair it was fine. (Younger than 12 1/2 however was taboo.) Also, on that: "the sanctity of confession" only applies to 'genuine acts of contrition'. If someone says they did something in the past, but no longer, and are truly sorry for it, then the priest isn't supposed to tell anyone... but, really, they should be telling that person to go confess to the cops too, as their penance. If someone is telling the priest, but clearly keeps doing it and intends to keep doing it, then "the sanctity of confession" doesn't apply. Either way, cops should get told.

This is somewhat misleading. Source provided at the end. The state of WA put in a new law requiring child abuse told during confessions must be reported and is being sued by 3 Catholic Bishops. The Trump Justice Dept is backing them. There is no federal law that requires abuse disclosed to clergy be reported and there’s been a long “precedent” of clergy being exempted. Is that precedent bullshit, yes.
Now, if a priest hears about something outside of confession, they must report it still. /1

In Washington state you are already required to report child abuse, or even *suspected* abuse, if you're a teacher, social worker, daycare employee, police officer, etc etc. You can be charged for NOT reporting if it comes out that you knew about it. But they want to carve out a nice specifically for priests???
