I know it’s not a popular opinion. I absolutely just had to pretend to like it as a kid. I thought it was creepy. Granted it did have episodes, nah man, show made me feel like I needed a shower.w
Mr Horse: "No sir I didn't like it". Trapdoor opens and everything falls away. That and 'Log' remind me of things that randomly enter my mind for no reason from the 90s
When R&S debuted they of course had to tone it down, walk the line, push as far as they could and no further... and that's part of what made it great. Supporting this idea is that when it got a reboot on Spike TV with no rules, no holes barred, fully nudity and profanity etc... and it kind of sucked. Possibly undermining this idea is that I'm not sure if it really did suck or if it was more about how Kricfalusi didn't care about production schedules?
I never understood why my parents never LET me watch ren and stimpy. I still would behind their back but the truth is kids don’t really understand what’s going on they just see a funny looking dude doing funny stuff, but as an adult I would never let my 8 year old watch this either haha
interesting. i saw these as an adult back in the day and always thought they were intended for adults. maybe it was the particular channel they were on in Canada. to find now they were rated Y7 is weird. almost as weird as the cartoons.
i mean when the cartoons included scenes like a walrus imprisoned in a giant nipple pleading for someone to "call the police."
I used to watch tons of TV at my grandparents' house up north because my mom refused to spring for cable, and they had satellite TV. I was watching Daria and my grandpa walks in, stands there for maybe a minute, and then walks off, saying "Jesus Christ this is a depressing cartoon."
Same, mom wouldn't let me watch this show. Well of course I eventually watched it, the halloween episode on a vhs of Nick halloween specials, and I've never watched R&S again, thought it was just dumb and went back to Rocko.
I loved it as a kid. It wasn't like this scene. Most the time, it was more goofy like walking with their butt cheeks instead of their legs. Or that time when one of them gave birth to a cute fart baby. But strangely, beavis and butthead I hated bc it was low effort gross humor in my mind lol. I still can't get into Beavis & Butthead.
I remember watching Ren & Stimpy a few times. Not out of enjoyment, more like morbid fascination and disgust, trying to understand why others found it so entertaining.
Nobody questioned it in the 90s. The show was widely celebrated at the time.
The reason why people no longer celebrate or talk about Ren & Stimpy today is not because we suddenly realized the show was too grotesque or too psychologically unhinged to be shown to kids.
It's because the show's creator John Kricfalusi is a pedo who groomed underage girls and reportedly had child porn on his computer. He only escaped investigation because police said the statute of limitations had passed.
The cartoon itself was never banned. It's just zombie IP that companies can use to pad out their content for cheap. Besides, it's not like Paramount has a moral compass.
Tons of parents, including mine, wouldn't let their kids watch Ren and Stimpy. A lot of adults questioned it in the 90s because it was viewed as too edgy for children.
Not sure exactly true, but it sure didn’t fuckin’ help. There’s still a back order of sensibility changes about what can be allowed in shows like these before all that came out.
That said, John K was a shit person to work for apparently, even without all the pedo shit he was pulling behind everyone’s back
Dilbert definitely was beloved for a long time, even as a non-office rat kid back in the aughts. Scott Adam’s just isn’t funny and is just…a problem to put it nicely
Currently not (the strip has really gone down the drain), but I remember about 35 years back when the strip started it really resonated with office rats like me.
On the right, Harry Potter, so: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_views_of_J._K._Rowling#Transgender_people (it has been claimed an impulse for her agreeing to the creation of the upcoming Harry Potter TV series is that the film series cast openly opposed her TERF views)
I’m not positive, but it might be a Dutch surname. “Ten” is an element of some Dutch names in the same manner as “von” in German or “de” in French, showing that someone is from somewhere/belonging to a group.

Are you kidding? Me and my Mum used to sit down and watch Ren and Stimpy together laughing like loons.
My dad thought it was weird, we loved it.

Great art is born from limitations. Problems beget solutions.
When there is no obstacle to expression, it becomes just that. Just someone saying stuff.

Same. Evan as an adult, I can't get behind it. Just not my brand of weird I guess.

It was geared to my age group, but I never enjoyed it. It was weird and perverse, and not in the way I enjoyed.

And this is tame compared to the creators later works. I could stand Ten and Stimpy, but not that later stuff.
