This show was rated Y7 when I was a kid. Now it’s rated TV-14.

My parents questioned this at the time….very seriously. It was not permitted for quite a while

I know it’s not a popular opinion. I absolutely just had to pretend to like it as a kid. I thought it was creepy. Granted it did have episodes, nah man, show made me feel like I needed a shower.w

Mr Horse: "No sir I didn't like it". Trapdoor opens and everything falls away. That and 'Log' remind me of things that randomly enter my mind for no reason from the 90s

Renn going wild with a boat oar was.... impressive.

I told you I'd shoot! But you didnt believe me! Why didnt you believe me!?!

My parents drew the line at Ren and Stimpy, and they were absolutely right to do so.

I loved Ren and Stimpy! Thank you for posting this!

Oh hey, actual for-kids Ren & Stimpy and not the Adult Party Cartoon run. It's been a while.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Are you kidding? Me and my Mum used to sit down and watch Ren and Stimpy together laughing like loons.
My dad thought it was weird, we loved it.

2 months ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 1

Meanwhile, you and your dad would sit down every saturday morning to watch Earthworm Jim and Freakazoid. which both were their own brand of weird :P

When R&S debuted they of course had to tone it down, walk the line, push as far as they could and no further... and that's part of what made it great. Supporting this idea is that when it got a reboot on Spike TV with no rules, no holes barred, fully nudity and profanity etc... and it kind of sucked. Possibly undermining this idea is that I'm not sure if it really did suck or if it was more about how Kricfalusi didn't care about production schedules?

Great art is born from limitations. Problems beget solutions.

When there is no obstacle to expression, it becomes just that. Just someone saying stuff.

I never understood why my parents never LET me watch ren and stimpy. I still would behind their back but the truth is kids don’t really understand what’s going on they just see a funny looking dude doing funny stuff, but as an adult I would never let my 8 year old watch this either haha

interesting. i saw these as an adult back in the day and always thought they were intended for adults. maybe it was the particular channel they were on in Canada. to find now they were rated Y7 is weird. almost as weird as the cartoons.

i mean when the cartoons included scenes like a walrus imprisoned in a giant nipple pleading for someone to "call the police."

billy west has voiced like, all of your childhood cartoon voices

2 months ago | Likes 173 Dislikes 1

Billy West? What a stupid, phony, made-up name.

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

And Charlie Adler

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No he didnt. Phil LaMarr did Samarai Jack

2 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

And now adult cartoon voices. Love ya Moxxy

2 months ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 8

oh hes definitely still at it

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That’s not Billy West, Moxxy is Richard Horvitz (aka Invader Zim)

2 months ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

They both voiced Zim.

Oh dang you’re absolutely right! My brain is mush… from all the cartoons. How embarrassing, as someone who won’t stop watching Futurama I did actually know this. https://media4.giphy.com/media/v1.Y2lkPTY1YjkxZmJld2VmNzQ1d2p3ODdiZ3ptOHNlb3d4bnh3YXEyNXV0bnp2c2JnZ2Q1dyZlcD12MV9naWZzX3NlYXJjaCZjdD1n/xUOwGm7pdxSPh6uzXq/200w.mp4

what's wrong with this? Happy Happy Joy Joy!

You think my parents ever saw what I was watching? They both worked long hours.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Divisive show it seems

2 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I loved this show, it was so ugly. Awesome.

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I used to watch tons of TV at my grandparents' house up north because my mom refused to spring for cable, and they had satellite TV. I was watching Daria and my grandpa walks in, stands there for maybe a minute, and then walks off, saying "Jesus Christ this is a depressing cartoon."

RIP Grandpa, you were funny as hell.

how very Macbethian - and the music fits perfectly too

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I hated this cartoon as a kid. It was just so ugly in every way.

2 months ago | Likes 163 Dislikes 22

Same, mom wouldn't let me watch this show. Well of course I eventually watched it, the halloween episode on a vhs of Nick halloween specials, and I've never watched R&S again, thought it was just dumb and went back to Rocko.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I couldn’t stand the humor.

2 months ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 7

What humor

2 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

I loved it as a kid. It wasn't like this scene. Most the time, it was more goofy like walking with their butt cheeks instead of their legs. Or that time when one of them gave birth to a cute fart baby. But strangely, beavis and butthead I hated bc it was low effort gross humor in my mind lol. I still can't get into Beavis & Butthead.

2 months ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

It was always intended to be ugly. That's weirdos like me like it.

2 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Same. Evan as an adult, I can't get behind it. Just not my brand of weird I guess.

2 months ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 7

It was geared to my age group, but I never enjoyed it. It was weird and perverse, and not in the way I enjoyed.

2 months ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 5

And this is tame compared to the creators later works. I could stand Ten and Stimpy, but not that later stuff.

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I loved this magnificent masterpiece in all its righteous glory 😅

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Titally agree. The artstyle is disgustingly offputting

2 months ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 7

The best kind of agree

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I remember watching Ren & Stimpy a few times. Not out of enjoyment, more like morbid fascination and disgust, trying to understand why others found it so entertaining.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

what about now? still the same?

2 months ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

Worse, because now I understand all the references.

2 months ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 4

Yep

2 months ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 5

Nobody questioned it in the 90s. The show was widely celebrated at the time.

The reason why people no longer celebrate or talk about Ren & Stimpy today is not because we suddenly realized the show was too grotesque or too psychologically unhinged to be shown to kids.

It's because the show's creator John Kricfalusi is a pedo who groomed underage girls and reportedly had child porn on his computer. He only escaped investigation because police said the statute of limitations had passed.

I've literally never heard about this holy shit.

2 months ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

TBF, he was fired from the show after the first season.

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's available right now on Paramount+ in my country (Australia)?

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The cartoon itself was never banned. It's just zombie IP that companies can use to pad out their content for cheap. Besides, it's not like Paramount has a moral compass.

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Tons of parents, including mine, wouldn't let their kids watch Ren and Stimpy. A lot of adults questioned it in the 90s because it was viewed as too edgy for children.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, ad that to the list of shitty things I now know. God fucking dammit....

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not sure exactly true, but it sure didn’t fuckin’ help. There’s still a back order of sensibility changes about what can be allowed in shows like these before all that came out.

That said, John K was a shit person to work for apparently, even without all the pedo shit he was pulling behind everyone’s back

I wouldn't call Dilbert "beloved".

2 months ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

Dilbert definitely was beloved for a long time, even as a non-office rat kid back in the aughts. Scott Adam’s just isn’t funny and is just…a problem to put it nicely

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Currently not (the strip has really gone down the drain), but I remember about 35 years back when the strip started it really resonated with office rats like me.

2 months ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

If you told me that was a real Dilbert strip, I wouldn't even doubt it.

Do I dare ask what the creator of Earthworm Jim did? And who’s the character on the right?

On the right, Harry Potter, s

I've never been able to figure out why Doug's surname has two capitals.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’m not positive, but it might be a Dutch surname. “Ten” is an element of some Dutch names in the same manner as “von” in German or “de” in French, showing that someone is from somewhere/belonging to a group.

Jfc, and this is the guy who's most known for a hermaphroditic hero in a super-suit.
