DrewK98
Maybe they could direct some of that intense anger at the Republicans. If they did that, nobody would be trying to primary them.
Jace99
If Americans want a new New Deal, every single Dem who takes corporate money needs to be primaried and purged from the party. If they want to keep their districts, stop taking corporate bribes. Simple.

Listen here you little shit

"Thank you for your, uh.. service I guess (??) - Mr. Schumer and Ms. Pelosi. Now take your huge swaths of wealth and fuck off to the retirement home. We'll take it from here."

"Notably, he cited two examples of effective older lawmakers who have drawn primary challengers in 2026 but who he believes deserve re-election: Representative Jan Schakowsky of Illinois, 80, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California, 85." -NYT article on this
boozits
Many times the DNC ran opponents in primaries against prog dems.
LittleChickadee
Go get 'em, tiger!
SlowerDwightYouIgnorantSlut
So fucking do something you crusty old fucks.
metalrulercid
Nobody over 60 should be allowed to be a position where you decide policy you won't have to live with.
boxak
They damn near stuffed Feinstein so they could wheel her corpse out to vote on things. Maybe they should elect some people south of 50 for a change.
FallenJester
Shape up or ship out grandpa.
glovelyday
He'd better only do it in solidly blue districts or it's completely self-defeating.
pr0t34n
But they're all old as fuck, how are they going to get new jobs at that age if they're not allowed to work in government anymore? And without new jobs, how can they afford to live after years of being tremendously compensated and receiving bribes and handouts?!
ToSisPoS
They can all run as independents like Manchin

Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable
Idonotbelievewehavecompany
TIme to get anyone over 665 out of congress, Scotus and Executive branch. THey are all out of touch with regualr Americans and need to go, some with Hangings
BobAllen2004
We can't let anyone get to 666, that's for certain.
moonshadowkati
Yeah, it's time to stop being governed by Methuselah. If you're over 200, you're too old.
Imustntrunaway
You don't intend to help us fix this goddawful fucking mess you enabled? Get the FUCK out the way.
DamnedIfYouDo
I support him, go get'em David.
JaneDoe2023
I'm definitely down with this, we need action.
nubblebun
I'm with David on this one. Democrats are fucking useless. Stand up get up fight. Don't fucking be polite. I'm with David on this one. If you're not going to fight get out of the fucking way.
ThailandExpress
Destroy corporate democrats & the DNC.
wandermanspacebot
After getting trounced in 2024 because independents thought the party skewed too far left and because a lot of the far left sat out anyway because they turned themselves into single-issue voters who forgot how a binary electoral system works? Why not just hand the midterms to the GOP?
SirButcher
I am pretty sure Trump & co has this on their plan, so don't worry. I am not sure how happy you will be to see them and tens of thousands innocent US citizens in concentration (if not extermination) camps, but hey, there is a high chance for you to get your wishes.
Next time, for the love of god, do not use the monkey paw....

Blackthorn74
So serious question; Democrats right now seem completely infective at countering (check notes) anything. Why should they get my vote.
someboreddude
They're firefighters. Right now, they have no water. Voting for them is giving them water.

Politician powers must be truncated, we don't need them making policy for the rest of us, unless they are severely crippled by strict regulation by/for the people!

Think of the stock portfolios of the 70 & 80 year old Senators! Won't anyone think of the stock portfolios!!! What?! Should these 70 and 80 year olds just retire and live a life of luxury, or mentor young 30 & 40 year olds on how to govern?! Insanity!
putzd63304
As someone who has suffered from elders who hate teaching youngers, this. The long-term damage that comes from not training or mentoring the next generation can be immense.

It’s already started.

You Are Not Entitled to Your Fucking Job. We work for the voters. Either do what you are told OR GET OUT OF THE FUCKING WAY
rubypilgrim
Hey, I like Bernie. Age isn't the problem. Inaction is the problem. Primary those who don't seem to understand what's going on. We need leaders.
The701
He's an Independent, not a Democrat. ;)
rubypilgrim
he's still in Congress, and people staying past their expiration date seems a problem in Congress regardless of party. It's not the numerical age, it's how well you are serving democracy and your constituents. McConnell comes to mind - a career democracy hater, bad news at any age.
iRecommendBooks
"But he stressed that the criteria for challengers to get his group’s backing would not simply be age. Notably, he cited two examples of effective older lawmakers who have drawn primary challengers in 2026 but who he believes deserve re-election: Representative Jan Schakowsky of Illinois, 80, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California, 85."
InkGoat
Oh, so he's wrong about everything. Great.

Pelosi, just a few years ago, delivered the CHIPS Act / the IRA (Green New Deal) with a 1 seat majority. Schakowsky is the Democratic whip and one of the most progressive members of congress. https://www.govtrack.us/congress/members/report-cards/2022/house/ideology
They're not old incumbents who sit around & don't do work - that's the distinction.
rubypilgrim
one other thing: we complain about those in leadership, and yet we look around for someone else to do the job. There IS no one else. It's YOU. YOU gotta step up and get into the arena. YOU who has to prepare yourself to take up the reins of power. YOU who has to learn to lead. Start by volunteering for grassroots organizations. Shore up your civic literacy. Get support by giving it. Talk to journalists, get coaching on how to work with the press. No one is too young to start this. No one is too-
rubypilgrim
old to mentor and support this. Everyone can stand up in defense of democracy. Fascism is scary, but collusion through inaction or infighting is worse. We don't need perfect, we need democracy.
dcmirepoix2350
I’m all for term limits and if we can’t have that then let’s have competitive primaries. It’s the next best thing to get those old fucks out and new blood in
amethystsadachbia
Sorry, Pelosi’s generation, but if you’re not helping, you’re part of the problem.
notagoodspelller
If they want to stop him, pass term limits.
SpartaWolf117
there's a minimum age limit, it's time we add a maximum age limit
VorpalSoupspoon
And wage.
acetothermus
AND term limits. If POTUS has limits so should everyone else!
whywritemythesiswhenihaveinternet
Disagree, at the very least until the Citizens United decision is reversed. Without getting money out of politics, chronically inexperienced legislators will be even easier prey to lobbyists than they are now: the lobbyists will have all the institutional knowledge to write and evaluate laws. But even without CU, having experienced legislators is good. We need compulsory voting, automatic voter registration, and ranked choice voting, or similar measures, to facilitate good legislative turnover
JaceTiger
They said term limits, they never specified how long. I'm thinking 12 years. Long enough to get experience, short enough to know their time is limited.
whywritemythesiswhenihaveinternet
I could see something like that, though maybe slightly longer than 12. Or just maximum candidate ages like we have minimum ones, maybe with an exception or altered max if the candidate got started in politics later in life. There's options
VorpalSoupspoon
As usual, there are a dozen different, better ways we could go about doing things, and we do none of them. On purpose.
Corrodias
I know there is for presidency, but what minimum is there for congress?
JoeMalmsteen
30 in the Senate, 25 in the HoR. https://www.senate.gov/about/origins-foundations/senate-and-constitution/qualifications.htm
GoneSolo
It should be retirement age. When you hit 65 or whatever it is these days you retire. And if you think old people aren't taken care of and you need to stay in congress then pass laws that take care of old people you fuck and tax billionaires and corporations at the proper rate( very fucking high) and thats how you can pay for everything.
VorpalSoupspoon
Tax rates don't even have to be high! Nobody actually paid the top marginal rates in the 50s, but the effective rate has to be just that.
LootenetDan
I wouldn't incentive them to raise the retirement age
GoneSolo
Then why would the older generation vote for them again?
LootenetDan
Because they're in a cult, and because they haven't historically cared about retirement issues as long as it hits future people younger than them
NeoAcario
I like the idea of just making it 2 terms max... for all positions. And you can only go up, not down. House > Senate > President. Do a good job after a term or 2 in the house? Try and be a senator.. same for Pres. Max potential terms add up to 24yrs. There's people that have been in congress for over 40... wtf.
smashpro1
Well, there's only one person that went down after being president, and that was John Quincy Adams.
JackieTreehornProductions
Because they get to trade on insider information. It's a golden ticket to making free money. They'll do just enough to stay re-elected and scoop up money and turn a few favors to the big donors. It's all a game and we're being played by career politicians who might have once tried to be good representatives but fade into power brokers once they see how little impact they can have vs the game being played. Our entire system is rotten to the core and only a small % are in it for us.
Osiricus
If the SCOTUS had an 18 year term then each president could choose 2 per term.
Jewdakris
I've heard from many people that the problem is that by doing that you are likely to lose certain elections where the incumbent just wins. My reply to that is what does it matter if neither candidate is actually representing us. So the Democrat is just supposed to win because they're the lesser of two evil. That time is over they are either going to give us what we ask for or lose their cushy jobs.
TinyOctopus
And this shows that institutional Democrats are more concerned about holding on to power than mentoring those that must follow our improving their performance now.
Vote them all out.
drownwithcrapitalism
TRUTH!
PicassoCT
The still think there will be primaries anyday now and the nightmare will be over.. they are worse then useless, they are authoritarian decoration..
FairfaxJack
Nancy Pelosi hates AOC more than she hates Trump because Trump is not a threat to her power whereas AOC is.
homoerection
Fuck Pelosi. And every establishment dem that’s maintained the status quo’s
DamnedIfYouDo
Not AOC or Mark Kelly, they're good. But let's get Katie Porter back in there!
CptRobotNinja
They are slowing bleeding what little power they still have away. Their experience has not made them effective. It's long passed time for them to step down and let new blood take the reigns. Follow Bidens example by stepping down. Don't follow it by waiting for so long that your successor is hamstrung from the starting line
Megamerican
Yep, they do nothing out of fear of being primaried. Glad he’s doing this to the cowards.
rubypilgrim
Idk, Bernie seems still full of fire and willing to mentor. Primary those who are doing nothing.
smashpro1
And is obviously mentoring AOC.
WhowasDariusRucker
Yeah, I wouldn’t put Bernie first on any list to primary, but I don’t think he’s doing anywhere near enough to platform the next two generations of progressive politicians. Mentorship is important but I don’t see a lot of institutional platforming to help progressive campaigns primary established democrats.
rubypilgrim
tbh, I don't know if we will have another secure election for a while. We still need leaders, which means we need mentors and resources. In this situation I honestly no longer care who's in Congress. Trump could dissolve Congress by noon today. We need leaders ready to step up no matter what the stains do.
TinyOctopus
Bernie also isn't an institutional Democrat. He's an independent.
Magjee
In a different timeline Harambe lived and Bernie was president in 2016
dasAchteck
yeah, i've always felt it more hopeful to appeal to non-voters than the mythical independent. if the batshit cliff the right has gone over hasn't been enough, you're not going to reason or negotiate with them sensibly or productively.
WhowasDariusRucker
Not to mention I actually really don’t want to vote for any party trying to repopularize Dick Cheney. That was an absolutely bonkers move.
InfocalypseRising
"no no we just need to lean further right and THEN they'll finally vote for us!" - Old Dems for the 17th election in a row
dasAchteck
maybe THIS TIME, they'll not shit in the sandbox, take our ball, and go home.
ilovetraveler
Agreed. There's no independent voters, just apathetic ones. Everyone has a side even if they won't admit it.
or0b0ur0s
I don't understand how we can still have 30% non-voters in this country. I'm sure there are those whose mental or physical health won't allow it and who don't have a trusted family member to help them cast a mail ballot. But that can't account for almost a third of voters...
Sure, a decade ago, I could get it. But not now. Who is still comfortable enough in this nightmare (and isn't voting Fascist already), to ignore what's going on?
dasAchteck
people who "aren't political"
Animorphs
Independent = embarrassed Republican
Anarchduke
I'm an independent. Because while I hate Republicans, the Democrats haven't inspired any loyalty in me whatsoever. I just don't have any other valid choices. Fuck Schumer. Fuck Biden. Fuck Harris. Fuck Clinton. Give me someone I WANT to vote for.
ilovetraveler
You can hate democrats as long as you still vote for them. If you can't tell the difference between the uselessness of the democrats and the vile misogyny, racism, pro rapist, fascist, terrorism of the Republicans then i really don't know what to tell you.
Animorphs
So did you not vote in the last presidential election?
