So you make the handle before you insert and glue the blade?

Correct! For wa handles at least. As long as the tang slot depth and dimensions match the knife tang then anything can fit on it. I attach with regular glue which allows the blade to be removed easily if needed by heating it in the oven at 200f for 20 minutes.
