My friends are planning this, great relationship with their families but wanted the same last name without anyone losing out more

Marriage is not considered a good legal reason to change your last name where I am. So, basically illegal here (Quebec, Canada)
Why would anyone want to marry in canada tho, common law is a thing there and also marriage proposes no benefits?
Not exactly. Common law rules vary largely from one province to another. Plus, people still like romance.
folded13
That's odd, considering that Quebec is strongly Catholic (or was), and the Catholic Church supports the tradition quite strongly.
Did I say strongly enough there? gah
Catholic religion used to have such a tight hold on QC as recently as the 60s, so now it's extra anti-religious in general.

"easy" lol. I've been married 7 years and I still have a lot of stuff in my maiden name.
Lachwen
Well, "easy" in the sense that legally all I had to do as a woman was write on the marriage license what my new last name was, and the 1/
government was like "Yep, that's your legal last name now." My male friend who took his wife's last name had to go through a LOT more 2/
Gotta go through the courthouse and change all your stuff but yeah.
If you fill out all the right paperwork, anything is possible.
Hyphenated or like completely new?
vanfem
Encrypted surname1 with surname2 as key! Vigenere or xor perhaps?

The701
How long does the paperwork stuff take? Is it fairly straightforward?

You’re lucky that’s possible in your country. We didn’t have that option :/
dfrinky1337
Every country has the option to change your name I guess?? You'd both have to do it. Not a part of the marriage procedures, but doable
In Germany you need a very good reason for it, e.g. physical safety, emotional trauma or marriage. In case of marriage only one of you 1/2
Can either adopt the others’ name or create a hyphenated name by adding the others’ name to their own. But the other spouse’s name will 2/3
Remain unchanged and the children will also bear the other spouse’s name. 3/3
TheGrantAlexander
Not every country has that option.
Didn't know, I wonder what the reason would be
Didn't know there would be a reason for law to make it impossible to do, I wonder what the reason is. Here it's not even that expensive

Some just invent a wholly new name, but often those're people who want to cut ties with their family.
LucyLovegood
My friends are planning this, great relationship with their families but wanted the same last name without anyone losing out more
TiredSnowball
Marriage is not considered a good legal reason to change your last name where I am. So, basically illegal here (Quebec, Canada)
Manhoarder
Why would anyone want to marry in canada tho, common law is a thing there and also marriage proposes no benefits?
TiredSnowball
Not exactly. Common law rules vary largely from one province to another. Plus, people still like romance.
folded13
That's odd, considering that Quebec is strongly Catholic (or was), and the Catholic Church supports the tradition quite strongly.
folded13
Did I say strongly enough there? gah
TiredSnowball
Catholic religion used to have such a tight hold on QC as recently as the 60s, so now it's extra anti-religious in general.
folded13
I did not know that, thank you.
FajitaJane
They didn't take mine and I didn't take their's. We just made a new last name.
Lulabel73
Megatron?
FajitaJane
Lulabel73
Next marriage then.
repeatuntilnotsad
Is it a combo of the two or what??? So curious!
FajitaJane
Totally new. Not related to either of our original surnames.

numonster
We were to lazy to change all our stuff like bank accounts etc.
seescoes
Hey, same
maijen0062000
I wondered if that was possible
ScrapCode
I had a friend's parent/step-parent do this and for the women it was easy but the man had to do soooo much BS to get his named changed
alwaysthecheesegrater
"easy" lol. I've been married 7 years and I still have a lot of stuff in my maiden name.
Lachwen
Well, "easy" in the sense that legally all I had to do as a woman was write on the marriage license what my new last name was, and the 1/
Lachwen
government was like "Yep, that's your legal last name now." My male friend who took his wife's last name had to go through a LOT more 2/
FajitaJane
Gotta go through the courthouse and change all your stuff but yeah.
alwaysthecheesegrater
If you fill out all the right paperwork, anything is possible.
mikeatike
Hyphenated or like completely new?
vanfem
Encrypted surname1 with surname2 as key! Vigenere or xor perhaps?
FajitaJane
Totally new
mikeatike
Perfect.
The701
How long does the paperwork stuff take? Is it fairly straightforward?
FajitaJane
It doesn't take long. Though I imagine it depends on state. The changing everything takes forever. I'm still finding accounts with my old.
tobyisagoodboy
Yeah nah, miss me with that.

You’re lucky that’s possible in your country. We didn’t have that option :/
dfrinky1337
Every country has the option to change your name I guess?? You'd both have to do it. Not a part of the marriage procedures, but doable
leadenjerry
In Germany you need a very good reason for it, e.g. physical safety, emotional trauma or marriage. In case of marriage only one of you 1/2
leadenjerry
Can either adopt the others’ name or create a hyphenated name by adding the others’ name to their own. But the other spouse’s name will 2/3
leadenjerry
Remain unchanged and the children will also bear the other spouse’s name. 3/3
TheGrantAlexander
Not every country has that option.
dfrinky1337
Didn't know, I wonder what the reason would be
dfrinky1337
Didn't know there would be a reason for law to make it impossible to do, I wonder what the reason is. Here it's not even that expensive
TheGrantAlexander
Likely to prevent fraud. But not sure
