It's always important to take into mind the character of our elected officials and their appointees, and one common thread that underpins the "character" of this menagerie of ghouls and creeps of all varieties is that of rape, predatory sexual behavior, and, of course, garden-variety misogyny.

Case in point: Republican appointee for the position of Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. We have known of Hegseth's sexual predation (up to assault and potentially including rape) for weeks now since his meteoric "rise" into the national spotlight, as granted by the television-addled rapist-elect who plucked him from a relatively obscure position as a contributor on Fox News. In a "prayer call" he attended with members of the Republican Administration on Tuesday, November 19th, he rather presciently warned that this "battle is just beginning."

The endless shoes-for-dropping continue: on Friday, November 29th, the New York Times obtained a letter penned by Hegseth's mother, Penelope Hegseth in 2018, elucidating some of the more reprehensible actions and aspects of his character and offering a glimpse into how even his family members view him.

A fragment from the letter obtained by the NYT:

"I have tried to keep quiet about your character and behavior, but after listening to the way you made Samantha feel today, I cannot stay silent. And as a woman and your mother I feel I must speak out..
You are an abuser of women — that is the ugly truth and I have no respect for any man that belittles, lies, cheats, sleeps around, and uses women for his own power and ego. You are that man (and have been for years) and as your mother, it pains me and embarrasses me to say that, but it is the sad, sad truth.

...

I don’t want an answer to this… I don’t want to debate with you. You twist and abuse everything I say anyway. But… On behalf of all the women (and I know it’s many) you have abused in some way, I say… get some help and take an honest look at yourself…"

These are comments from the man's OWN MOTHER on behalf of the way he treated multiple women and partners in his past, including his ex-wife (and mother of three of his SEVEN children), Samantha, and should be disqualifying as it is. Between his multiple divorces and fraught relationships with his children and families, his COMPLETE lack of experience, his overt embrace for white-Christofascist and borderline Nazi beliefs and his utter disregard for half of the populace, I can't see how anyone could possibly vote to confirm such an odious, repulsive, leathery husk of a man; then again, I would not be surprised if it were to happen. Fortunately, this news is fairly conclusive and damning; while it's far from a sure thing, it leaves room for Senators like Murkowski and Collins to do the right thing for once (though I wouldn't hold my breath) and at the very least damages the optics and ability of the DoD to function with such an inexperienced and incompetent man as its Director.

***
Edit: To make it absolutely clear: this is a man who has in the past openly expressed the "opinion" (through articles published by the Princeton Tory school newspaper of which he was editor, no less) that raping an unconscious woman is "not rape" because "she didn't say no." This is a grown man who neither understands nor even cares about the concept of 'consent.' It's surreal and beyond description.

Day Twenty-Five Reminder:

Take from it what you will.

I'm tired of mourning the loss of my rights; the indignance of watching the "man" who not only was pivotal in taking those rights away but additionally committed such indisputably revolting and dehumanizing acts be rewarded for it cannot be adequately described with words.

Between the skirting of political norms and laws without repercussion and the overt plans to use the Justice Department and National Intelligence apparatus to target specific minority groups, organizations, and political opponents, there should be no doubt that we should all be prepared for the empowerment of paramilitary groups in addition to sections of the military and law enforcement to be used to forcibly suppress dissent and persecute those who might.

Since the plans for extrajudicial power grabs and expansion of Executive power for corporate gain have been laid bare — and the majority of those in the Republican Administration's close circle have either been involved in predatory sexual behavior (including pedophilia and human trafficking), covering it up, or both — we have no reason not to believe that these people will use any means necessary, absent morals, to commit arson upon this country's institutions from within. I believe all citizens who care for what our liberal democratic system of government purports to stand for should do the same in its defense.

To me, any single part of this is instantly disqualifying, and I struggle to see how anyone could possibly defend abstaining from voting against, much less voting *for* this repulsive, impotent, thin-skinned, hateful, criminally vile rapist monster. Every day until he is either disgraced and out of office or dead in the ground.

The most sickening victory of the new republican party is that pointing out how unqualified someone is only reinforces support for them.

The GQP congress will approve him even if he was a convicted rapist, like his boss.

The fact that the Republican Party isn't giving Trump any blowback for these absolutely horrid and incompetent appointments is just going to... blow up in their... faces...

Crap. No it won't. Because these diehard fascists are going to use gov't to control information. MAGA = NAZI.

This is the character “Christians” consider acceptable. And they wonder why their religion is slowly but surely dying. They wonder why women won’t date, let alone marry and have children with their sons; why their entire existence is being deleted from the gene pool.

Isn't it weird that conservatives (the ones defined in political science as the ones with rigid morals codes usually and skepticism towards social change) kinda endorse this guy? Or maybe it totally makes sense with the fossilized ideas in their heads from Biblical times...

Lucky for him, this only means his mother is crazy to Republicans.

“Accusing” is newspaper talk that leaves ambiguity. Mother stated a fact - that’s what it is.

Is it me? Maybe it’s me. There is just TOO many of these stories to keep up with.

10 months ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

I decided to avoid news, twitter, etc. I can't handle the constant drama & daily outrage of the stupid crap he/his people will do while he's in office. Not again, not for another 4 years. Am I worried? Yup. I'll just deal and figure it out if (WHEN) bad stuff happens.

10 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yes, the point is to either 1) motivate you into action or 2) inur you with so many stories that you cease to care and willingly accept this as your new normal... and then they win.

10 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The depravity is so deep... you could send a submarine into it and it'd achieve crushing depth before hitting bottom.

10 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's the point...your outrage won't beat their lack of shame...BUT retreat and regroup where you're needed!

10 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Unrelated but related. Somehow I can’t see my own political stuff in my favorites. How did I get blocked from my own stuff? Anyone?

10 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

For instance, I go to Current Events in my favorite and it says “ no posts yet “

10 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not sure. Sorry you were downvoted for asking a question. I can confirm though it's not just on your end. You have no posts when I looked. That sucks :( hope you can figure it out. And sorry this isn't helpful probably

He is a rape-supporter, defining rape narrowly, so that sex with an unconscious woman is not rape.

I was jury on a courts martial last year and the 8 of us agreed a person asleep or unconscious cannot consent.

10 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That is the legal standard out in the World too....

So, I am guessing you are a field-grade officer of some sort... last courts-martial I attended, the lowest ranking person on he panel was a Major.

A reminder that he published an article in his campus newspaper arguing that having sex with an unconscious woman was not rape because she did not say 'no'.

Well, time to find this guy and castrate him while he’s asleep. He “can’t say no” guys

10 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Leave him alone with some large inmates. See if they give him the chance to say no.

He can't say no

10 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If he didn't want it, the balls have a way of shutting that down

10 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Knew I forgot something — can't believe it was something so repulsive and glaring. Then again, all of this is absolutely nauseating, and I'm still having difficulty processing a lot of the more monstrous aspects in the depths of depravity that seem so deep-seated in the Republican Party. We knew it was bad for a long time, but that doesn't make these details any less shocking. At some point you just begin to feel numb.

10 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

To be clear the commenter specifically said "published" which is 100% correct, he did not write the article. That doesn't make it much better and taken in context with several other articles that were published while he was in his position at the school newspaper, it's pretty clear that he endorses that kind of messaging.

10 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you - I looked into it to make sure I had the facts straight before amending my post last night (at the end, under the edit). Everything's pretty clear on that, insofar as we have the details right now. It's exhausting just reading and thinking about the things these people, now at the levers of power, believe and have done.

Misinformation and making good education inaccessible to large swaths of underprivileged Americans has most of the blame for it but apathy and people being too lazy to care to do their civic duty has a big chunk of blame too. I have no idea how it's going to be fixed though.

We try not to sexualize Annie.

I am kind of curious as to what he would define it as if she woke up during.... would it become rape, in his mind, or she missed her only opportunity to say 'no'....?
