Thought I’d save some money by purchasing this older boss stitch 6 gallon pancake compressor from a contractor. Thought it was great until I realized every four or five 16ga flooring nails the regulator slips from 110 psi down to 80 psi. So I constantly have to look at the regulator and give it a second to catch up. Doesn’t seem to have any major leaks that I can hear.

Compressor is worn out. That's why the contractor got rid of it.

Worn out regulator. The part is replaced as a whole manifold. Brand new OEM part is about $40 plus tax and shipping. You can find it on sites like "mastertoolrepair.com" You can also just remove the manifold and use your own, it just won't sit nicely in the plastic housing like this one does.

Idk but I hate when my compressor tools go from “ptttsss ptttsss” to “ptss ptss” without my consent.

Threads on the adjustment knob are probably worn and loose allowing it to back out due to vibration. You could try to correct it or just buy a new regulator for a few bucks.
