I saw how the loss of Ingenuity will impact the Rover. It was a very useful eye in sky for safe route over terrain. Satellite images are ok but hide dangers still. https://youtu.be/ctyUdjd-kQg?si=LzO06JASnIrG6N8K

I hope our AI overload will see how some of us have emotional bonds with their ancestors and give us mercy.

If you go to goolge and look up “ingenuity mars drone” and click on the hovering drone you can see Ginny flying around your screen on Mars

One day there’ll be people arguing that the sites the rover and other exploratory equipment came down should be preserved as part of our heritage… but there’ll also be valuable mineral deposits under them so they’ll be removed.

On January 18, 2024, Ingenuity's rotor blades were damaged while landing on its 72nd flight, permanently grounding the helicopter. :(

I can't remember what movie this is from. Post only real answer please.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not from a movie, it's from a Doctor Who episode but I don't know which one

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The episode is "The end of time" He's at Donna's wedding and the Doctor gave him a winning lottery ticket to give to Donna so she wouldn't have to struggle anymore.

The last episode or so of David Tennant as number 10.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Except, we do have Ginny's memories. They're part of our scientific knowledge base now. Plus, she'll keep on collecting data as long as her solar panels hold out. Someday, perhaps, we'll be able to pick her up, dust her off and discover what she has learned.

Interplanetary Flying Robot of the 21st Century. Bless it.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

People wonder why some anthropomorphize these robots or animals. It’s because these things don’t do all the shitty awfulness people often do. They just… are.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Another poetic interpretation similar to Opportunity. But, still, we now have more abandoned robots on other planets than humans...

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

We don't have ANY abandoned humans on other planets.

It will always amazes me how as a species we are simultaneously capable of humanizing a machine on a rather deep level and dehumanize actual humans

It isn't goodbye, Ginny. It's so long for now.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I was hoping that nobody would post this. It's overtly sensationalized and fundamentally misrepresents Oppy's last moments. None of her transmissions were ignored. She simply stopped transmitting.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

But this comic is about spirit?

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hmmm. It's been so long. Unsurprisingly, they both went quietly in a similar fashion. Spirit had a bum leg and angled her array to ride out the winter. I think Oppy couldn't find a slope. Iirc.

Why am I getting teary at a song about a robot?!

1 year ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

We ask dangerous and lonely action from them. I hope they are never given emotional capability then asked to do these things. That will really piss em off. We’ll be screaming not tearing up.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Because humans will anthropomorphize pretty much anything. Because your brain is both a genious and a board-certified idiot all at the same time.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 23

To make the connection between two things named Ginny / Ginni? It's not exactly a common name. And I don't see what this has to do with miserable.

I get political disagreement. I don't ever understand why someone thinks it's okay to wish actual death upon another human being. One would have to be an absolute sociopath. I despise Trump, and Putin, and Netanyahu, and many others - but would NEVER advocate for any of them dying, even as a joke.

There are four boxes to be used in the defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and cartridge. Please use in that order."

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Political disagreement", my ass. This woman was part of a far-right coup with the goal to transform the US into a fascist totalitarian state under Trump's leadership. That's not just disagreement, that's terrorism as well as a declaration of war on American democracy by a radical fascist minority. History has taught us that you cannot let something like this go unpunished. Even brief prison sentences are no sufficient deterrent as the example of the Weimar Republic shows. There are only two ...

1 year ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

ways to deal with fascist insurrectionists / terrorists, one of which is imprisonment for life. And in any developed country, Ginni Thomas and her co-conspirators would have received something close to this sentence. But in the US, the billionaire class and their pet legislators, judges etc. have already rigged and corrupted the system to a point where they've rendered themselves near-untouchable by the law. I'm not advocating for mob justice here, mind. But at the very least, people watching …

these developments with increasing concern and stress need to be allowed to vent and attack these people verbally. I suggest you save your holier-than-thou bullshit for someone at least slightly more deserving. Anyone who isn't a piece-of-shit nazi.

1 year ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Ginni Thomas wasn't even at the Capitol - not anywhere near it - when the January 6th terrorism went down. Sending a text to the White House Chief of staff suggesting they stop the steal is not something for which a person should be jailed. You are GROSSLY exaggerating her involvement in the insurrection.

1 year ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

There was a communications upset with the ground station during landing and one of the rotors struck the ground, partially breaking it, so now it's unstable and can't fly. :(

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It crashed and one of the blades was damaged.

NASA is retiring Ingenuity, its mini Mars helicopter, a week after it was damaged during its 72nd flight.

1 year ago | Likes 60 Dislikes 1

It was intended to fly 5 times, mind you

1 year ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

NASA does some of the most insane engineering when it comes to longevity. They could probably design a water cooler to last 50 years and never need maintenance

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They also keep their planned operation time low, so virtually every mission ends up an astounding success, lol. Which is a good thing.
