“Everyone fails at who they’re supposed to be”

Oct 22, 2020 9:49 PM

Pretty much as the meme says. A few months ago I was offered a temporary leadership position while another lead went in (non-COVID) medical leave. Said lead has returned but I was thrown into another, similar leadership position and I’m miserable. I never received any formal training and my supervisor never shows up when he’s supposed to. The kicker, I’m not even officially IN the position I’m holding. I’m only an “””acting””” lead. Sorry for the rant but I’m seriously at a loss for what to do.

Been there, done that, got the scars.

Ah yes, you've uncovered the big secret of being an adult. No one knows what the fuck is happening or what they're doing and we just wing it

Fake it till you make it

go above you supervisors head, youre probably doing a lot of what they are supposed to be doing

If you always wanted it, why didn't you prepare for it?

Ask other Leads (esp. the one you covered for). They might be sympathetic, know the boss is a tool, and should know how to do their job

The other leads in my department ARE sympathetic. They’re also really fucking busy with their own sub-departments.

It’s more than just the lack of training. It’s what the all this stress is doing to my home life.

Is it possible to do a skip level and meet with your supervisor’s boss? Don’t trash your sup, but maybe you can get some help.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’ve tried that avenue. My Value Stream Leader doesn’t see the problem because he does the same thing

Btw, this is *all* of us when we get moved up a notch. Be confident, learn everything you can, then push Mgt to make it official title & pay

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I’m getting the pay. I would’ve gone back to my original position/shift a long ass time ago if I wasn’t

Get the job in writing or don't do it. If they give it to you, learn what your subordinates responsibilities are and make them do it.

Fake it till you make it or get fired for gross misconduct

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That’s not really an option with two kids and a legally blind wife at home

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Make sure you are getting compensated for this not real promotion.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

So much this! Took me too long to learn that "paying your dues" is a bullshit excuse.

Everyone in leadership positions is faking it. You’re fine.

4 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

As someone in a leadership position....this imgurian is correct....we just fake it til we make it and it's been 2 years and I'm still faking

Management is like that Naughty by Nature song "Down wit' OPP." Fuck no, I'm not down with Other People's Problems; I have enough of my own.

Remember that gripes go up. Try not to over share or complain to them. Ask for and encourage involvement from your team. Find out from them

What they think is most important to move forward, and who excels at what. Ask for feedback and listen. Find a supervisor support blog.

Solid advice right here!

Just make sure everyone below you is doing their job, and tell them they're doing great at it. Also call everyone under you slugger or sport

Scooter if they fuck up.

Call them Sir, Ma'am, or whatever formal pronoun they want.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

No, no. That creates a hostile workplace. "hey, you" is the only acceptable address.

Lol

What kind of a lead? Also - if you have a good relationship with your company - this is a good thing to be open about, to get support.

The hourly kind between regular machine operator and supervision.

Ping me - I used to deal with this kind of thing all the time. Many opportunities just depends on what you want to do.

Same thing happened to me my friend. Take all you can and learn as much as possible. Don't crack under the pressure and learn to use excel.

To clarify, Excel is a hugely useful tool for time management and responsibility tracking. Keeps you from feeling overwhelmed.
