The importance of a good stage grip

We've lost a lot of great musicians over the years but when SRV left us, it was the saddest I've been outside of losing a family member.

Rene Martinez (guitar tech) is as much of a legend as SRV is in this case.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Guitar tech to the rescue. Off stage there’s a big box full of guitars and tools and that’s his job.

We’re still doing the 14th thing? When does it end? When?!?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I saw Jimi Hendrix in concert. When he broke a string, he tossed the guitar over the stack and a Fender rep brought him a fresh one.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Isn’t this how every guitarist does it? Can’t stop the show.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Love me some SRV; but big hand to, René Martínez, a professional amongst professionals!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you, this'll be wicked helpful next time I'm SRV

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Hot damn that's a hot swap!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My dog used to lose his shit every time we walked by the SRV statue on Town Lake, he was fine with other statues, not the SRV one, Haunted.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

SVR- one of the greatest ever! Gone too soon :(

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Saw him perform twice - amazing!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We have a new documentary about him coming out on March 21. https://youtu.be/MbsqUfzwL-w

I saw Richard Thomson break a string at a club gig, as he starts to change string he singing Twist and Shout, audience doing the…

…call and response, clapping along, gets the thing in tune for the final, dah, dah, dah, dadaduh, boom boom Clang! ASTONISHING

What a pro. Smooth

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's like a Formula 1 pit crew.

2 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Let B.B. King show you how to change a string mid-song: https://youtu.be/lKf-mU6QrJs

Treat your staff well and pay them accordingly

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

True in all things.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So smooth. That’s sexy AF.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As smooth as an F1 pit crew

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Man I miss him

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The guitar he exchanged, from the Play It Loud exhibition in NYC a couple years ago.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There's an autoharp musician who start shows with about a dozen harps handy. He'll play one until a string breaks, then grab the next one.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was present at his last concert. Glad I got to see him.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Gone too soon. I live in Austin and jog by a statue of him all the time.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He didn't change a guitar string, he changed the whole damn guitar.

There was an episode of ACL where SRV did change a broken guitar string while still playing.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I will give anyone one trillion dollars if they can change a string that fast.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Ta-da! Done! So fast you couldn’t see me. Pay up.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lKf-mU6QrJs B. B. King mid-concert

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

That was amazing thank you!

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That was no where near as fast as the guitar change. No money for BB King's corpse.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And he’s playing 13s. You know how badly you have to beat those strings to break a 13?

2 years ago | Likes 108 Dislikes 0

No, how badly do you have to?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Prolly plays acoustic to beef up

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bro he also used to stir cocaine into his coffee so maybe he was on edge 24/7

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

His grip was iron. ? such a loss. #R.I.P.SRV

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thats what Angus played

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Something something jumper cables.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not really much difference, it's not like .003" thickness change makes them that much more durable since the tension is also way higher.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

His action is also set high. Watch the MTV unplugged where he is owning a 12-String like its nothing.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Theres a story he cracked the neck of the guitar by gripping it too tight while playing that show.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

He's got blisters on his fingers!

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

He had such thick calluses that they would sometime just tear off. He'd glue them back with super glue to get through the gig.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Honestly that just sounds disgusting and painful

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My friend doesn't understand the significance of "13's"

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

His highest "thinnest" string was as thick as the second string on an average set (and thence thicker on every string upward)

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Guitar string thickness. For mere mortals, 13's would feel like suspension bridge cables.

2 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

The high E string is .013" thick and the rest of the strings are progressively thicker. Most electric guitarists use a .009 or .010.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I used to break bass strings. Not on purpose. Probably from overplaying because I was too poor to buy new ones

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Jesus, he played 13s? Why? I can't imagine playing those. I didn't even know it was an option.

2 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

I always wanted to see a fake fight between him and vanhalen. (He used .9s)

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Larger sound, better sustain. He also tuned down half a step I think.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

That is down from the 70s when he was playing 16s. Plus he had practice guitars strung with bass strings.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It's.. 3 higher?

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He had monster size frets, too, if I recall correctly

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

13s with monster frets? Is he a giant? Damn.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It's an arms race. Bigger frets makes it easier to play, but easier to chord your wimpy strings sharp if you squeeze hard.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

His fingers are metals.

2 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 0

Thats rights Tokis

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Tokis, are you wearings my pants?

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Actually… superglue.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have seen that video so many times, im always amazed how it sounds so seamless, he starts playing the second he puts the jack in.

2 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

Not just that but SRV adjusted the solo on the fly (bassist Tommy Shannon notices it).

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm amazed that he's playing it unsupported too. No strap for those first bits.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Shout out to the sound guy for muting/unmuting the channel at the correct times. It's a thankless job.

2 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Well you just sort-of thanked him so now you've gone and created a paradox. Now all sound techs will want praise instead of beer.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sound tech who isn’t big into drinking here. Yes, please :)

Reminds me of Danny Carey swapping out a drum, love the laugh at the end: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUOJNbm4vBk

2 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 1

Reminds me of when Maynard helped him find his Tool https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkJiXLy0tbA

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That’s even more impressive because he has to play around the bad drum. Stevie just had to sing for a bit and grab the new guitar.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

He's playing the solo with the broken string, then switches while singing. It's still extremely impressive.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes, I agree, wasn’t knocking Stevie in any way.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Danny Carey is such a badass

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Sho nuff. Any of his videos on YouTube give you a warm, wholesome feeling. Always smiling as he gets real joy out of playing.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I once alllmost caught a stick he chucked into the crowd….aaand that’s when I peaked.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You did better than me. I was in the nosebleed section the two times I saw Tool. Tomahawk opened for them the second time. Great show.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We drove from NYC to Cleveland just so we could afford some floor seats. Worth it!
