Does the length of the pole affect clarity of reception or transmission (other than range related)? Like with frequency or amplitude?

Mostly it just gives you a better vantage point to receive and transmit. There are a lot of barriers to RF at or near ground level.

UHF and VHF are primarily a line of sight affair and if you can get up the range gets better.
