3I/ATLAS New Interstellar Object Discovered

The tiny dot in the center of the image is the newly discovered interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, previously known as A11pl3Z. The comet is only the third known interstellar object after 1I/ʻOumuamua and 2I/Borisov. 3I/ATLAS, which is around 24 kilometers (15 miles) in size, is currently 4.5 AU (Astronomical Unit, 1 AU is the Earth-Sun distance of 150 million kilometers or 93 million miles) away from the Sun. It is moving towards the inner solar system at a speed of 61 kilometers per second (38 miles per second).

The hyperbolic path of the interstellar comet is inclined to the ecliptic by 172 degrees. 3I/ATLAS will reach its perihelion in October 2025 at 1.38 AU from the Sun. That is closer than the planet Mars. After that, it will move away from the inner solar system.

This is the trajectory of the first two interstellar objects 1I/ʻOumuamua in red and 2I/Borisov in yellow. The comet 3I/ATLAS has a very high eccentricity of 6.

The first interstellar object 1I/ʻOumuamua was discovered in 2017. Its size is estimated to be between 100 and 1,000 meters. Its shape is unknown. It could be cigar-like or pancake-like or a spheroid.

This is a Hubble image of the rogue comet 2I/Borisov that was discovered in 2019. Its size is less than 500 meters. The objects in the background are stars.

Astronomers estimate that 10,000 interstellar objects are passing inside Neptune's orbit per day. Their size ranges from micrometers to kilometers.

The new Vera C. Rubin Observatory will provide more insights into these objects. The origin of the comet 3I/ATLAS could be in the thin galactic disk.

And yes, it has become a running joke in the astronomical community about a certain Harvard based astronomer claiming aliens, with quite a number of jokes on Bluesky of predicting when he will claim aliens (then later he made such type of comments to the DailyMail)

^that certain Harvard-based astronomer -Avi Loeb, Ph.D.- is a theoretical physicist who served as Chair of Harvard's Astronomy Department and is currently Director of the Institute for Theory and Computation at the Center for Astrophysics...!

1000/2=500, 3300/2=1600??? i have doubts...

Wow I'm surprised that this wasn't a post about an asteroid on its way to a collision course with us. What with how things have been.

I wonder if we can get a sample...

A spectrum would be great. The element composition could tell something about the origin of the comet. For example, the carbon-oxygen ratio is higher in the inner Milky Way.

Here's hoping!

Oh boy. Can't wait to find out that this is a special 1 in 10 million year phenomenon called an interstellar asteroid shower that picks up in intensity over 5-10 years before showering the inner solar system with a barrage of devastating asteroids!
