Heavenly Delusion
I feel like a lot of people missed this one because it wasn't on the normal streaming platforms. If you're one of those people, be sure to check it out!
Fifteen years ago, disaster struck human civilization, and now dangerous man-eating monsters roam the ravaged lands, posing an existential threat to the remaining survivors. Amid this turmoil, an isolated facility shelters children and nurtures them in peace. However, as a few among them find out about the world beyond the narrow periphery of their nursery's walls, their curiosity about it slowly grows.
Meanwhile, in the outside world, young survivors Maru and Kiruko band together to search for a special place called Heaven, each for their own reasons. Carrying past burdens and tragic secrets, the two hope to find answers to the cruelty they have experienced in their lives and in the world, which still remains in tatters.

This is a show that I feel went under the radar for lots of people, probably because its Chinese not Japanese, but is probably my absolute favourite of everything in this post.
Two friends provide a special service: using their extraordinary powers that let them enter photographs, they jump into pictures brought to them by clients in order to grant their wishes. Through the eyes of the photographer, they live through the events surrounding the picture and try to decipher how to solve their client's request.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
This show follows Frieren, a near-immortal elf, after she and her companions defeat the Demon King and go back to their regular lives. She spends the next fifty years off exploring and learning more magic... while her former companions age and approach death.
At the funeral of the first one to pass away, Frieren has the profound realization that her different relationship to time means that she barely knew him, despite having adventured with him for ten years.
I fail to put into words just how fantastic this show is. Just watch it, please.

Summertime Rendering
I still need to finish this one myself, but I've heard nothing but good things.

Hell's Paradise
I'll be honest, this show is pretty dang confusing, but the mystery of it all is kind of the point haha
A squad of prisoners and their guards are sent to investigate a mysterious island. They get stranded there and must rely on each other to survive the island's mysterious and monstrous residents

Solo Leveling
Y'all like power fantasy? Enjoy this one.

This anime starts with what is basically an entire movie as its first episode. That movie is absolutely stunning too. Don't dismiss it as an idol anime.
Sixteen-year-old rising star Ai Hoshino of pop idol group B Komachi has the world captivated; however, when she announces a hiatus due to health concerns, the news causes many to become worried.
As a huge fan of Ai, gynecologist Gorou Amemiya cheers her on from his countryside medical practice, wishing he could meet her in person one day. His wish comes true when Ai shows up at his hospital—not sick, but pregnant with twins! While the doctor promises Ai to safely deliver her children, he wonders if this encounter with the idol will forever change the nature of his relationship with her.

Josee and the Tiger Fish
This one is a movie, but it's pretty cute so I had to include it here.
Tsuneo is a university student, and Josee is a young girl who has rarely gone out of the house by herself due to her being unable to walk. The two meet when Tsuneo finds Josee's grandmother taking her out for a morning walk.

To Your Eternity
The story of an immortal orb that becomes whatever it touches; it eventually becomes human and learns what life is. It's kind of a sad start, but that's what makes it so good IMO.

5 years ago, I was so bombarded with anime recommendations from co-workers, that I started One Piece to tell them all "I'll take recommendations when I am done with One Piece". Best goddamn decision I ever made this shit is a masterpiece. Of any media.
orangegoats
Thank you for the show recommendation. I needed some new anime in my life

I'm a cold, emotionless husk but Frieren had me crying for the first three episodes. Also Solo Leveling is VERY graphic for the first few episodes. Watch at your own risk.
FlyingGiantElk
I watched Solo Levelling in one day yesterday, it was enjoyable and I’m looking forward to the next season. Frieren was enjoyable too.
MrMcGeeIn3D
If you don't wanna wait for season 2 of Solo Leveling, read the manhwa. It's complete and fully in color.
MegaDeuce
Holy shit, an anime recommendation list on Imgur? I don't remember the last time I found one here, +1.
wintercoat
Just finished Frieren a couple days ago. It was so much better than I was expecting. Everything everyone said it was and more.
TongueTiedLabourerfromtheLandoftheLittlePeople
HistoricalContext
Man, Frieren got me into watching anime, after years of being on the fence. It's so fucking good.
MartynMage
That's amazing to hear! I hope you pick up a few other shows in the future too

Solo levelling is fantastic, thoroughly enjoying it. Must say though Hulu need to get in the sea, they buy exclusive rights then horde them for a limited viewership in the US, so everyone else gets to miss out.
TheLordFoxington
I read the comic it was based on, from beginning to end, and I knew home much of a treat everyone was in for the moment I saw it was beginning made into an anime.
The same can be said of "A returner's magic should be special" (perhaps even more so. )
badgermans
Highly recommend reading either the manwha or the light novel, which both are finished. The manwha has amazing visuals.
MrMcGeeIn3D
There was no chance of the anime matching the visuals of the manhwa. I don't think Crunchyroll has the budget for that.
StopTheWorldIWannaGetOff
Really enjoyed it. Decent power fantasy without becoming boring, and some interesting plot developments that kept me hooked.
Smoretank
I remember reading the Manga on it and it was amazing. Then after awhile it just got so boring. His personality went flat and it just sorta hit the "oh gotta lvl up here is another powerful monster for the guy to beat." I kinda dropped it after he got to the ant island.
Asadsadsadclown
I feel it suffers from the explosion of the isekai genre. It’s one of the most important comics in the genre but it took so long to adapt that there are a million other worse stories out there telling the same thing. It’s kinda like if Dragon Ball Z was just adapted today, it would feel like a tired retread.
DSREX
Ironic considering it is what really kicked off the LitRPG trend. But it is a KR and took longer to get into the hands of fans, then too long to adapted. It is the golden rule they all are trying to be. I have read the manhwa and the Anime is fixing the storytelling issues it had in print. More world building and fleshing out of side characters before they become important to the story types of things. I have high hopes for seeing this whole story in anime. Plus my kid loves it
Lj523
Frieren got me back into anime after not watching any for almost a decade.
MartynMage
That's awesome! Any new shows on your list since getting back into it?

ThanksForTheThing
JabesMcJabesface
#7 one thing to recommend it over so many other power fantasiess, "it is everyone else's fault my life is bad" sort, in that a lot of people are decent to the main character just because they are decent. He does not have to do something to win them over, or save them from slavery, they just are fine with a friend who is not powerful.
BossVarriack
Just gonna throw out my suggestion of Baccano. Friggin fantastic anime about a bunch of mafia folks and a pair of thieves who accidentally became immortal and never realized it... or figure it out... seriously, it's a wild ride of fun
TFawx
Baccano and DuRaRaRa!! Are both amazing!
pilomotor
If you liked Baccano, be sure to check out the creator's latest anime, Dead Mount Death Play. Watch the first episode before learning what the show is about, if possible.
BossVarriack
oooh, will do
michealangleo
yay one of these with new stuff.
excellent selection
CalvinMcFly
I've never liked Anime, but I think thats where the Kingdom movies came from, and they are awesome!!
llebkcir
great list. many ive seen, some ive not heard of.
MartynMage
Thanks! Any you think you'd pick up and watch?
llebkcir
far to many to list here in complete, but here are some you may like: 86 eighty-six, absolute duo, akame ga kill, akudama drive, the ancient magus bride, blood c, claymore, dance in the vampire bund, darker than dark, elfen lied, all of the gantz line, goblin slayer, psycho-pass, rage of bahamut, samurai 7, scrapped princess, star blazers (both of them), witch huntder robin, wolfs rain. thats a good start
Klaumbaz
Solo Leveling. I endorse. good watch.
fleetmind
Has some really good animated sequences that came out of nowhere with how well animated they are. Like you will have a competent fight scene and then in the middle of the fight you get "That Shot" that does some tricky camera work or something else impressive.
AgingVideogamer
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm always on the hunt for a new series. Shangri-la Frontier is an under the radar anime that is worth a watch on Crunchyroll.
omenrose
Imagine if SAO was actually about playing the game! :)
MartynMage
Agreed! I am in the middle of that one right now
TheFakeCraigFerguson
Oh fuck, To Your Eternity. It was only releasing a couple episodes at a time so I completely forgot about it, fuck. And I don't have access to CR anymore either.
TheFakeCraigFerguson
Got distracted by doctors, but I had wanted to add that the begining isn't just kinda sad. It fucking broke me.
ZorkFox
Excellent! I’ve been looking for new anime to watch. And you’re right: Frieren is amazing.
LoudBirb
#1 the (disappointingly large) incel bits of the online anime community lost their shit at this one because one of the characters rejected another character's advances because they said they have a man's brain and a woman's body. There's more detail to what's going on in the anime, but that'd be spoilers. Suffice to say, chuds throwing a tantrum at trans people existing is probably part of why it flew under the radar for some.
B99Reactions
Yikes
NewCrobuzonCitizen
It flew under the radar because its on Hulu and that is only for US.
LoudBirb
I mean, the new season of Bleach and Undead Unluck both aired on Hulu and they both definitely made waves. Being US only certainly didn't help, though.
Merc4food
Yeah, but views on Hulu and people talking about them aren't the same thing. One was a returning popular series and the other was hyped up before release. I'm sure people found a way to watch those shows where the service failed them.
deathblade369
It's really a shame, because Heavenly Delusion is excellent.
LoudBirb
Agreed, yeah.
Daarst
I mean, what you said about a man's brain in a woman's body is already a spoiler.
LoudBirb
I tried to be as not-spoilery as possible, but I may have done a bad job. C'est la vie.
HonestCommentFarmer
Eh, for the first-ish episode.
ImMasturbatingRightNow
Someone please make a list of top 20 Hentai to watch and why. Thank you :)
YoureWaifuAShit
it's just "legend of the overfiend" 20x
pilomotor
There are plenty of other classics, like La Blue Girl and Mahou Shoujo Ai.
FinneyKat
I just watched Josee, the Tiger and the Fish because it was on this list, and I am so happy you added it to your list! It was so good. 😭🥹

I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

Solo leveling is too bloody for me. Would love it if you add what kind of anime they are.
MartynMage
I did that in previous posts but this one was feeling a little text-heavy already. I had hoped the videos would help showcase what to expect haha
kaichanti
Sad Start? Bruh that To Your Eternity recommend is 100% legit, but it's sad ALL THE WAY THROUGH. Great for 'good crying' to cleanse the emotional soul though.
MartynMage
Haha, I suppose you're right
Snooj
To Your Eternity has ... kind of a sad start? Did I miss the part where it stopped being sad?
fleetmind
That show took me completely by surprise with how brutally sad that first episode is, took me a while to try watching it again. Continues with the protagonist making a bunch of new friends and watching them die. Which makes the protagonist's ability all the more grim.
Snooj
Hey, guess what keeps happening.
Fendeezy
Nope, all that shit, including the 2nd season sad AF.
NoOneEverExpectsReposts
I havent seen one of these is forever! Imgur used to be full of movie and show recs man good times
keyblader1985
A bunch of them were almost all the same things though. But that got me thinking; I have a lot of favorite manga that have somewhat slow starts, are NSFW or are otherwise not fit for my regular manga posts. Maybe I should do a manga recommendation post sometime.
NoOneEverExpectsReposts
You should! And remember to send ya boy the link my guy!
MartynMage
You should totally make one of your own some time!
SerialSeb
That a great point but I would not know how to capture sreengrabs like that. Always wondered how people can grab any scene from a movie or show and post it as is or with effects like in the IrongGIF battles. Probably an Adobe tool that cost an arm and a leg :D
jebylen
I use OBSStudio for when I need to capture anything moving from screen, I think many people use it for streaming too. That would work
jebylen
It's fere
jebylen
free. not fere. not frieren either. frieren is awesome, watch it!
Sunflier
Has it been dubbed?
MartynMage
I'm fairly certain every anime listed here has a dub, yes
Sunflier
Oh yeah. The beyond journey's end is terribly sad. Breaks my heart thinking of lingering on after those I care about dyng before me.
LupusLilium
Then you're very likely going to want to skip To Your Eternity.
Sunflier
That one was good too. Still ongoing?
LupusLilium
3rd season seems to be in development. So y'know, here's to hoping. While that finale wasn't exactly a cliffhanger, it still would be nice to get more.
