For trade, yes. Only the EU can negotiate trade deals, set tariffs etc. All member states have to follow EU law. Germany or France cannot make their own trade deals or set their own tariffs.

Australia was at a trade surplus with the US. We import a lot more than we export. So what "deficit" did Trump use to calculate the tariffs he put on us? Oh that's right, he didn't. He put tariffs on our stuff because Big Pharma and Big Agriculture are Big Mad that we won't end publicly-supplemented medication (Big Pharma doesn't get to rip us off) or modify our biosecurity laws to allow potentially diseased and untested/untreated american meats or fruits & veg to enter the country.

For my U.S. based Imgurian friends .... his entire justification for the 10% tariff on Audtralian imports is reciprocity. He reckons we "unfairly rip you guys off" .
We have had a Free Trade Agreement with you guys since 2005 with NO tariffs at all. On anything American.
The 10% is Goods &Services Tax paid by Australian Importers to our govt when those goods are sold. Fuck he is an idiot!

Those aren't actually the tariff rates. Those numbers are *literally made up* -- or more precisely, they're calculated from the trade deficit ration which has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TARIFF RATES, so they might as WELL be made up.

The numbers are calculated purely by trade deficit. If you look up imports and exports from Lesotho, you'll find Lesotho exports make up 99% of trade, while their American imports are 1% of the trade between the two countries. You'll find the same result for all the numbers on the list.

They get a 99% because American exports are 1% of the amount of imports from Lesotho. That is how all these numbers are calculated. That's why the numbers seem so weird and the larger nations are lower, because they have a more equal trade deficit. It is literally the dumbest metric to impose tariffs by.
