I wonder if the speed of the fly matters. imagine the fly "alighting" at about .9999999999999c. It'll still take a long time, but at least there's fireworks every once in a while.
Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.
I like the idea that everyone has a different default measurement of time. To children, a few hours or days can feel like an eternity. To adults, years can go past in a blink. But in the cosmos... Millions of years are barely a blip. And if that doesn't make you feel unimaginably small, then you have quite an ego!
What if each planet is a cell, and we live in that cell. The universe a body. And judging by most people nowadays, we might be a cell right at the anus.
Eternity starts as soon as the cricket match commences. (“The English are not a very spiritual people, so they invented cricket to give them some idea of eternity. ” - George Bernard Shaw)
But according to Zeno, before that first second can pass, the first half-a-second must pass. And before that first half-a-second can pass, the first quarter-second must pass. And before that first quarter-second can pass... well, you get the drift, it just keeps going on like that with shifting goalposts all the way down.
"Every thousand years, this metal sphere, passes just a few yards from the earth, you climb on your roof and take a swipe at it with a single feather, hit it once every thousand years. Until you've worn it down to the size of a pea, yeah I'd say that's a long time, but it's only half a blink, in the place you're going to be...." Randy Describes Eternity - Built to Spill
