Wow two harsh responses there. You know nothing of the kid and what worries him. An animal attacking is pretty unnerving. Yes. He should look where he’s going but I bet even when you were an older teenager you were still in the ‘kinda ditzy in the real world’. Plus: you never make a mistake? Looks like the arch of his foot goes over the tail so probably just spooked the cat anyway not actually injured.

Alternatively the kid could learn to watch where he's walking instead of staring off in a completely unrelated direction. Also, pets can actually understand if you apologize to them; not that they understand the words "I'm sorry" of course but if you give them affection immediately after it lets them know you haven't suddenly turned mean and are out to get them

Even if a cat "could" understand an apology *which it cannot* it's a fuckin cat. They don't give a fuck about your platitudes. Cats are assholes if they want to be and they want to be alllllll the time. It's not like that kid hauled off and kicked the cat, but I certainly would give it thought if that cat came at me like that again.
