The Letter

Seems like the administration is trying to install one of these in every University. Sad that Columbia University has already caved to the administration.
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/federal-agencies-say-columbia-university-s-new-policies-a-positive-first-step-toward-regaining-aid/ar-AA1BwuM5 I'm sure they received the same exact letter. Good to see Harvard taking a stance.

We're trying to combat antisemitism but also you need to stop discriminating against Nazis. Make it make sense.

Coming soon: Dr Alan Garber's forced resignation by a greedy board of trustees and a capitulation by Harvard. This pattern has repeated time and time again. I want Harvard to hold this line, but I'm losing hope.

So basically "You need to give Trump and Musk complete control to fire or suspend anyone they want, and all your fields must have as many racists as non racists"...

What bullshit.

It is not possible to actually comply. So don't even try.

- don't allow in anyone with *these views*

- create a department to make sure your student body has a diversity of views in every department

- do not have any diversity policies

Of course the request is not made in good faith, so there's no reason to think it would be internally consistent ,but this is so blatantly impossible that it's almost silly.

Sure, we'll just throw in a mask ban while we're at it.
I'm surprised they didn't demand a tradwife course be created...

The moment Columbia cow towed to the orange fascist was the moment they became an enemy of our democracy. I don't care how hard it gets, giving an inch to the fascists is unacceptable. Good on Harvard for doing the right thing.

Banning masks again! 2020 vision

I fully expect Trump to try to nationalize all the major universities soon.

Our school is closing the LGBT resource center and the women's center. According to the administration, it's just a name change and the same people are going to be in charge, but it makes me worry.

Columbia caved and still got their funding yanked. May as well be defiant for some easy PR if kowtowing isn't going to actually get you anything.

Perfect example of what is the way to deal with the orange turd. Do not cave in, but stand your ground. And if not possible, at least do not obey in advance. Practice civil disobedience to make it impossible (or just very diffcult) for those facists to establish their rulership. US citizens grew up thinking that America is "The Land of the Free" so they never really learned that freedom needs to be defended. Now the world looks at you and waits for you to start doing what is right.

If the USA were to go to war against China, lots of Americans/institutions may just "sit it out".

hey harvard, does this mean you're bringing back the 13 people you didn't let graduate over their pro-palestine protests last year?

Yeah as soon as it said anti semitism I knew it actually meant pro Palestine

It's the classic "THIS type of fascism is beneficial to me, so I am Ok with it, but THAT kind of fascism is not ok with me so I don't support it." It's pick and choose.

Imagine all those researchers going to Canada, and now Canada can have all those patents for the new life saving advances.

I bet they can find a good lawyer or two to take it to courts and waste government resources

The govt will just "accidentally" ship them off to El Salvador.

Fuck Harvard. They are one of the biggest reasons fascism is winning in the USA. Their think tanks, focus groups and paid experts have dominated the news media in this country for decades, and not for the better. Studies published by Harvard related groups and individuals are the favorite quotable sources for right wing assholes everywhere.

You are making it too easy. Colin Jost, Al Gore, Conan O‘Brian, JFK, Natalie Portman, Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, Matt Damon and RBG all graduated from Harvard. Do they lump them all into your vitriolic classification as well? Of course, GWB, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer and Henry Kissinger all went there as well, but it shows that it is simply invalid to put all of Harvard into one big pot.

What you're not mentioning is Vance graduating from Yale.

I'm sure he hates all things Harvard.

Harvard has the resources to ride this out, a luxury most universities do not have. Good on them for telling TFG to take his demands elsewhere.

TFG? The Fucking Government?

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So basically we're officially at the point where the government is policing thought crimes 😬

It takes one to stand up and say "NO" firmly for others, even the small schools, to follow their lead. And then if they all say "NO" the government can fuck off with what it wants.

Problem is Columbia also has those means. And they preferred to give in

3 months ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

Columbia has a typical endowment, Harvard has a fuck you endowment

3 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Somewhat. Harvard has a far stronger alumni base and a $54billion endowment vs Columbia's $14billion. Endowments aren't earmarked for this sort of thing, but I am guessing the board can initiate emergency withdrawals, if needed.

How about instead, we make colleges and universities give people education instead of being based around money

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

to be entirely fair, under our present system the schools still gotta pay professors and researchers, and *this* gov ain't paying that bill

3 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ok. While Harvard has an endorsement the size of North Dakota's or Alaska's GDP, that of Columbia is (only) the size of Tajikistan's! Still a shit load of money.

3 months ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

That doesn't mean they have 14 billion dollars to spend. It means that money sits in an account and they spend the annual profit. If we assume a 5% return and typical taxes, that's "only" about 500M, against a yearly operating budget of 6.6B. So they can't just spend the endowment without destroying the long term revenue.

3 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

It's not as much as it sounds. My school spends a billion $ a year on research.

3 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good on Harvard. This timeline is the worst still though. Man do I wish these were real.

At a minimum, take a Republican with you.

No, Stay, Fight

I mean, sure, but there is a rapidly closing window for ANY type of resistance. People are already dying in El Salvador to make way for the regime. For very many of us the choice will become much more urgent and the potential outcomes much less pleasant. And frankly I don’t blame people for not wanting to die in camps because their neighbors are eager to lick the boot.

Sounds like planning to fail. If they feel powerless they should take one practical action to prevent that future tomorrow. Posting doesn't cound. The next day take another.

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Again, I agree with that sentiment, but I think you are too eager to dismiss the context. ‘Planning to fail’ ignores the reality that we have already failed. People dependent on USAID are already dying. Now it moves closer to home with these deportations. There is no coherent pushback to the abuse of power already happening. Rule of law is being openly flouted, and we will never protest our way out of fascism.
