The internet has always had smut, and it's not even that hard to find.

The other version is a reason I got a warning strike

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It used to show up in feeds both here and on reddit, but a few years back when they both went their separate ways to appeal to wider audiences, it went underground. For a while it's essentially only been accessible from the quarantined subreddits.

So, I click the box, I click Save, and I'm told "That user name is not available". That user name of course being mine, so of course it's "not available". I'm not TRYING to select it.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

I like mature content - who doesn't? But I trust absolutely noone on this page to send me stuff I actually want to see. Blind links on Imgur? That's how you see stuff that would make Tubgirl look like Mormon Reading Hour. No thank you. Burnt once, never again. I like my sanity.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I legit miss when they just regulated hidden albums to a url change, now they've removed other people's access almost entirely.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Except that allowed you to access other people's private albums without their consent. I don't get how it was allowed for so long anyway.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

My question is: how will they sift through millions of private images to figure out what's "adult content"?

2 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Algorithmic first pass, maybe with a human review for complaints, maybe not and fuck yo' pictures.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Hahahaha, no. Imgur doesn't have a human moderation team anymore. They got bought by a major firm. Staff got downsized.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Easy, they'll just delete everything from every inactive account and then probably use an AI to look at active user's galleries.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Through the finest AI imaginable.

2 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

AI can detect pornography with almost perfect accuracy and can often get the specific category of pornography correct. The AI just says how likely a picture is of a certain category--so the moderators get to choose which categories at which likelihoods. I'd wager you're going to see people put in a lot of appeals because a bunch of false positives come up--like cosplayers or swimsuit pics

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 13

No, it can't. AI is dogshit. You have no fucking clue what you're talking about. Any image with close enough colors will get flagged.

I seem to recall one programmer complaining how desert shots kept tripping image searches due to similar colors. :)

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Oh, alright, sorry forgot that a lot of people don't understand even rudimentary syllogistic logic. Just because the AI can get all the NSFW content does not imply that it can get ONLY the NSFW content--hence the false positives.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha… oh, wait, you’re serious?! What AI is almost perfect? Name one.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 5

15 years ago, any google image search would have some NSFW content show up. Does that happen anymore? No, not unless you want it to. That particular AI is free/cheap to use. https://cloud.google.com/vision

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Reddit image hosting sucked, Imgur got made to host the images of Reddit, Imgur got really popular, completely bans porn, users leave Imgur to return to Reddit, Reddit image hosting sucks...and the cycle continues.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Commenting on Reddit is atrocious. I go to Reddit for content and here to comment

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There was tumblr somewhere in between.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

A large portion of the image hosting for those NSFW subreddits come directly from here, so when this place gets nuked, so does all of that, as the links will no longer function.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Why weren’t you there to begin with if you were looking for porn?

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's not about porn honestly. Imgur has been in steady decline over the years. The overlords are obviously trying to make this app as advertiser friendly as possible. Since they were bought out, I've had problem after problem pop up between bugs, ui designs, qol features removed etc. Literally the only good thing they've done since Sep 2021 is increase comment limit and that happened 3 weeks ago. This is the straw that's going to break a lot of camels backs.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Imgur will delete all uploads of pornographic and explicit images from all users' accounts even if those uploads are hidden and not posted in the public galleries. Not cool. Not cool at all. I'm outta here after May 15, 2023.

2 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 2

I don't get how though. Is the algorithm going to nuke everything that even resembles nudity, or will they have a human look at people's private pictures?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They will use a program to delete porn and explicit images and anything that resembles that stuff.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

tiny octopus thinks that if you want to party in someone else's house, you play by their rules, even if they change them every now and then. You don't have to like it, but if it's that intolerable, you go play somewhere else or make your own house. with hookers and blackjack.

2 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 13

Very much so. Just ask tumblr. This may drive people away from here. It may not. We'll see. I'm not a fan of the change, but it's not my decision. If it makes a noticeable difference in my user experience, I may not spend as much time here. So it goes.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wow what an actually shit take from you. Usually you're way smarter than this.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

I sort of agree. If you're at a party, it's OK for the host to change the rules and it's OK for you to politely mention to your host that you're leaving because you don't like a particular rule change. If you've moved into a share house, though, it's less OK for the owner to unilaterally change the rules with no notice. That's why we have laws protecting tenants rights.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

This is more a party than a house, in that analogy.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They didn't change the rules though, they are just following the rules more closely now

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 10

They're extending the rules that applied to public posts to cover hidden posts as well. That, tiny octopus thinks, is what has people's nipples in a twist. Oh, and that the subreddit /r/SocksOnRoosterFeet, etc. won't be able to link their porn here anymore.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 8

No, it said they are being more clear about them.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 7

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

To an extent, sure. However, we are the ones who generate the revenue for this site and we should get a say in how things run. I've seen more users opposed to the new policies than for them (purely a subjective observation). That said, I am seeking alternatives for imgur, as you're aware😁

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 5

That's sweet that you think we have that power

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 5

"Should" being the key word, here

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

No. The advertisers are the ones that generate the revenue. Unless you're sending a shit ton of money out of your own pocket to imgur every month. They are simply caving to the demands of their funders, which is sad, but not beyond understanding.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tiny Octopus needs to stop licking the boot, because that is the entire reason this is happening.

2 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 8

There use to be tons hosted on imgur that wasn't posted to the main galleries. You basically had to have a link to it. Seems like the company that bought imgur a year or two ago now is trying to clean house and reduce the amount of content they host as well as getting rid of any thing payment processors might find objectionable.

2 years ago | Likes 386 Dislikes 4

Fuck big businesses.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You used to be able to browse by subreddit and they removed that

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think it’s also related to copyright claims. Reddit does periodic takedowns for the same reason.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They should fix the android app which turned into a POS since they ad loaded. It lags uncontrollably and requires several restarts to go thru a few albums. Imgur is frustrating to use more than 10 min at a time.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

My Pi-Hole seems to help. You have to purge the cache every one or two weeks, and it restarts sometimes, but it does mostly OK now. There was a period where I switched to the browser, though.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is sad that imgur started as a hosting site for reddit (another major porn site) and is being weird about being a porn site.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How am I just now learning Imgur was sold?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Idk people were posting about it when it happened

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I guess their ad revenue comes from the public part and the huge private collections are just dead server costs for them. No money to be made from stuff that is uploaded from somewhere else to be linked to from somewhere else without touching the money making public part, where they are already banned anyway.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Or they're regretting their purchase and it's up for sale again.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I doubt that. A move like this normally comes about 6 months to a year before a major partnership and attempts at increasing their revenue stream.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Is reddit still using imgur for it's pics and do they still have mature content?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think so. I wonder how Reddit is going to avoid having all the NSFW reddits crippled. Or maybe that was the point all along.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or they just don't want the massive legal liability

2 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 15

Facebook also didn't like the liability and they still get people toying with the algorithms and loading NSFW content all the time + the massive amount of pedofiles making private groups. Almost like abusers don't give a crap which platforms they use to upload their bullshit.

2 years ago | Likes 169 Dislikes 3

...have you not seen what happened with Budweiser?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Because g-rated content doesn't include revenge porn and other dodgy shit, it's just easier to do a blanket ban. Nothing to do with being puritanical, it's just business

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

because of recent laws that can rake internet websites and even ISPs over the coals for things they host on their websites

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

OF COURSE it has it's origins in Catholicism. I'm shocked. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Center_on_Sexual_Exploitation

2 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

A Catholic organization being highly interested in sexually abused children is hilariously, tragically ironic.

2 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Its because its all centered around America, which is by its nature, puritanical, and because of that the entire internet has to be involved

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

because G rated people vote how you tell them to vote, buy what you tell them to buy, over and over and over...

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

VISA is one of the most active companies in censorship on this planet.

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Because children bring in more ad money than adults.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd suspect the "cleansing" of the private collections now is just b/c there's (next to) no ad money to make there, but server costs to pay.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's never about the children. It's about advertisements. The company who pays for ads doesn't want porn anywhere near them, because it might hurt Their Brand.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Because of the chiiiilllldddrreeeeennñ

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

...which is particularly crazy when you look at the contents of the ads.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Because the law gave payment processors too much power and they can now just kill a businesses ability to make money at all. The question is why are the payment processors being puritanical and G rated.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

They get pressure from "family"groups

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Don't be stupid. it's because the site can be safe for work. Browsing a site at work with NSFW content leads to policy violations, penalties, and lawsuits. If a site bans NSFW content that means it's accessible anytime, anywhere, and thus open for business anytime, anywhere. It's about $$$.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Aka religious nut jobs who only want the freedom to force their religion onto everyone else and pretend like that is religious freedom.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't they have any idea how much money can be made from adult content? Not every space needs to be sanitized "for the children". UGH!

2 years ago | Likes 100 Dislikes 1

Yes, the world is definitely short of adult content. Don't they know this is the only place we can get it? UGH (big fuckin /s)

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 7

IIRC it has to do with how the US government regulates banks and adult content. I don't recall the specifics, so don't quote me on that, but I remember it being something along the lines of mixed content vs either SFW or NSFW has to be regulated more strictly and it's just a headache to do.

2 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

US government doesn't care. In fact it would be illegal for the US government to care (there are a bunch of cases addressing this). Its all down to companies spending money on ads.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This would be a good opportunity for a payment processor that caters exclusively to adult content.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

The issue is that a big part of it comes from VISA/Mastercard and good luck being a payment provider without them

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh great. Yet another law that needs reform.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

How to devalue your company in one easy step. They could at least do it in a bunch of little ones like Elon.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Medialabs probably isn't selling anytime soon, but this actually raises the value. Do you know how much financial liability comes with hosting NSFW content?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Maybe we should ask Yahoo after they picked up tumblr

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

None. Since the law was never passed in the US that makes sites liable for user actions, as long as they address any reported illegal content the liability falls on the user that uploaded it.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That's not true, you're forgetting the fines

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

so company buys imgur, and then removes the scope of its whole business case. Did they just buy it so they can delete it?

2 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 9

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Imgur makes money via ads on public content... Not your privately hosted porn.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Like tumblr?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ah yes. Imgur’s “whole business case.” The one where they allow people to upload and store nearly unlimited content for free. “I’m taking my resource-draining elsewhere! Good day!”

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 5

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

They bought it to monetize it. Expect incoming subscription plans (emerald) and increased ads. Getting rid of the association of lewds/nudes tied to it is the first step to get payment processors to agree to working together.

2 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Don't forget making the mobile site completely nonfunctional, with constant "Download the app!" popups. Reddit's doing the same, but at least it's usable even if it's annoying - Imgur flat out does not work at all on mobile without an app. Which I refuse to download on principle, but also because it's a naked attempt to snatch and sell data.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yep. The move away from browsers to specific apps allows for easier advertising, user data collection (for targeted advertising), and a more specialized layout of the site and functionality on devices like phones and tablets. It's a real shame so many sites want specific apps; like I get it, but I still hate it.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It's the way they cripple the actual site to force you into it that pisses me off. I tried to get one of my favourites a week ago to post in a Discord conversation, and I ended up having to go to my damn desktop to get the link. Because it wasn't retrievable on the site, and I wasn't downloading anything to get to it.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0
