Everyone wants to be with a mpg until they want you to act "normal" around their family

COOL!

She's really into Roller Coaster Tycoon, Bigfoot podcasts, and Star Wars, while tolerating that Im into Most Sci-fi, Colony sim/Base builders AND she likes to touch my wee wee while letting me touch her who ha.

I see no downside to this arrangement.

I have no clue what manic pixie girl even is.

My favorite take on this trope... Manic Pixie Prostitute: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XL2ekEeMk0Q

I mean, that was the point, wasn't it?

And we love them anyway. Or at least I would.

I knew girls who were "Hollywood quirky" MPDG-types. In real life, they're several kinds of unstable, including one who engaged in criminal behavior against an ex-boyfriend. Think "yandere" but it doesn't end well for her.

The onion?

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Arrested Development" did a great job of this

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's just the male equivalent of "I can fix him"

2 months ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Except the male equivalent, especially with manic pixie dream girls, is "she can fix me".

2 months ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Yea such an odd trope. I think the most egregious one is "Sweet November" like, spends time with the dude they're having a good time. Then "Actually, I have cancer".

Granted I ain't seen the flick since it came out , but hot damn I though "Man that's fucked up, "

As an autistic bloke, I wasn't upset. I just got married. Worked out well.

As long as it's not BPD, we're cool.

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Hey, not all of us fuck ups with BPD are that bad, some of us have gone to therapy.

Well I'll just go fuck myself then

I feel like you deserve more credit for that line that you're going to get from just a handful of upvotes, kudos

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

whats the male equivalent for manic pixie dream girl?

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's hardly any, male romantic leads tend to be guys who need to be fixed or being equals, MPDG are all about being caretaker, muse, and lover to the male lead without asking anything serious in return.

As someone with bipolar disorder, "manic dream" sounds terrifying.

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

What...what did people think they were?

2 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Fae?

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Magical Girlfriends who only exist to teach men how to grow the fuck up with no desire or wishes of her own besides being whimsy. That is WHAT the trope is.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Daddy issues and a bad haircut mostly.

(The secret is: all the manic pixie dream girls are neurodivergent- be than autism, ADHD, depression, bipolar. That’s what gives us our special spark!)

2 months ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 6

Im neurodivert. I'd rather meet someone who understands the conditions compared to whatever the hell a manic pixie girl is suppose to be.

2 months ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Manic pixie dream girl is the romanticized/fetishized/infantilized version of neurodivergence. You’re absolutely right- it’s always better to surround yourself with people who have educated themselves on neurodivergence. However, the manic pixie dream girl stereotype also makes it easier to pass as neurodivergent- “oh she’s just quirky/eccentric!” (a privilege I personally benefit from) @InevitableBadger totally nailed the concept in their comment

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Technically "manic pixie dream girl" was a term invented by a film reviewer to criticise the unrealistic representations of female love interests in the films of the early noughties, but we saw it and saw people we knew and why they were like that, and so we gave it the new meaning that I described instead of what the author intended. The younger generations will presumably adapt it to the greater recognition of neurospiciness, as is their right, but the core concept remains.

Poor Nathan rubin. He coined the phrase in an article, and regrets that it took on a life of its own. Also poor literally, he doesn't have dental

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The "manic" is the upswing of a depressive cycle, not necessarily full bipolar but certainly getting there. So they're vibrant and energetic and all the rest, but you only see them on that side of the cycle not the downswing so never see the bad bits ("dream"). "Pixie" is a look, "girl" is optional.

2 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Very well put, damn.

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

"Manic dream" sounds terrifying to anyone with bipolar disorder.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sometimes I dream of being manic just to feel something again. Then it strikes and I empty my bank account, get hospitalized because I get dehydrated, and act like a total dick to my loved ones

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, you only really get to completely restart your life because you fucked everything up so many times.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Too many of you don't get what Maniac Pixie Dream Girls are or why they're a problematic trope. They're cute, they're quirky, they turn the man's life upside-down, but they exist ENTIRELY for the benefit of the man's emotional growth, rarely expressing her needs or wants that might differ from his, and conveniently disappears when she's no longer needed for his growth.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

They respond to man's need to be understood and be seen. It's the polar opposite of the dumb Blonde trope.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Meh. It's 100% no different from the perfect himbos/dark brooding breast tropes that are in every fucking romance novel to ever exist. It's a fantasy. There's nothing wrong with fantasies.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

except too many men do expect women to play muse and caretaker, women tend to understand the Kronks don't exist.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

This has nothing to do with the short lived manic pixie thing though. Men have thought of women as lesser beings that are only there to be caregivers for a few thousand years. There is absolutely no evidence of any kind that shows that the manic pixie nonsense has had any affect whatsoever on how women are treated. People can't just say something is true because it feels true without actual info/facts to back it up.
