A compound found in cannabis could protect one of the world’s most dangerous fungal pathogens.

Cryptococcus neoformans causes life-threatening meningitis.

In lab tests, researchers found that two cannabis compounds—cannabidiol (or CBD) and cannabidivarin (or CBDV)—killed the fungus more effectively than commonly used antifungal drugs. The compounds also worked on common fungi that cause skin infections like jock itch and athlete’s foot. The researchers tested the treatment on wax moth larvae, which have an immune system similar to ours. Larvae treated with CBD survived at higher rates than those given a standard antifungal drug, and almost as well as uninfected larvae. The cannabis compounds appear to work by damaging the fungus’s cell membranes and disrupting its energy production.

This study shows that CBD might be a powerful treatment for skin infections, and possibly more, if further research confirms its safety and effectiveness in humans. CBD is also knowns for its anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, and neuroprotective properties. It's already approved in some countries as a treatment for rare forms of epilepsy, such as Dravet syndrome, where it helps reduce the frequency and severity of seizures. Studies also suggest it may ease symptoms of anxiety, insomnia, and chronic pain, and may support recovery from conditions involving inflammation, like arthritis or multiple sclerosis. Unlike THC, CBD does not cause a high, which makes it more suitable for daily or long-term medical use.

i got email from MPP months back, there r bills in many states to revoke weed advancements. obviously weed is a threat to alcohol corporations revenue (alcohol is a drug in liquid form). i suspect alcohol corporations funded weed criminalization since the 60s to today. But... drugs are illegal.

Neuroprotective? Isn't extensive use connected to memory issues? For some reason, I can't remember...

I mean I guess... cannabis is really good at killing brain cells.

All hail Science!

It's not science if it does not advise for marijuana and shrooms.

2 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Well then do note that science strongly advises to wait till at least 25 years old. Smoking before then carries risks of compromising the brains development in various ways.

Cannabinoids and nicotinomides have incredible health potential; it's the crap that they often get mixed with partnered with the smoke inhalation method that causes most of the issues.

I mean, that doesn't mean it's better than antifungals in some way. It just means it contains a good antifungal.

I get a "THC is even better than science" vibe from the headline, and it irks me. Not because anything is wrong with cannabis as a source of medicine, mind, it's just a mildly sensationalist headline.

Maybe I missed something but the study linked in the article mentioned testing against certain fungi, not in any animal or human brain fungal infections. It's a jump from "it seems to affect fungi" to "OMG it fixes be l brain infections".

Science reporting is often over-hyped or given misleading headlines in order to draw the reader into the story. They discussed this Science Friday the other week, it's a huge problem.

Ahaha, fixes brain. The desperate badly proven claims that get upvoted by cannabis fans.

Some fuck who knew his cannabis use was distorting his mental state got jailed for almost 40 years the other day for carving up a schoolboy with a sword: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cvg977nkl9xo

Literally in the article and part of why he got his sentence. Kid.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

The article just reported what was said by the defense, that record of communication existing does not in itself prove what was said in that communication to be true.

But you're old and have dementia and probably already forgot what we were talking about

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

You been depriving your brain of oxygen or what.

The defendant being sent down for 40 years minus time served is not being quoted. It's the judge referring to evidence including that from psychiatrists and showing the reasoning for the final sentence.

The hilarious part is that he got a LOWER sentence for aggravating his mental conditions with cannabis before carving up a schoolboy.
