I saw a post claiming a Megalodon tooth mounted on a whale vertebra is the most badass fossil.
I say a Velociraptor and Protoceratops locked in a fight to the death is more badass. And it's real https://www.amnh.org/exhibitions/fighting-dinos/the-fighting-dinosaurs
Unlike that tooth/vertebra set-up https://www.fossilera.com/blog/about-that-badass-megalodon-tooth-in-a-whale-vertebrae

I’m gonna break a lot of hearts when I tell you guys that velociraptors were only about 2 ft tall and 6 ft long including the tail.

Until you realize that these animals were the size of a turkey and a pygmy goat.
HessianGhost
A pygmy goat and a vicious carnivorous turkey, locked in mortal combat for all time. Still cool.
Cascadia1977
Agreed. I think it's cool af. But I like birds and goats
cntdn
I saw a documentary about this fight. Like they built a scenario leading to the fight and how it ended up as a fossil. Still have the DVD.

Maybe this fish fossilized while eating another fish?
IAmTheBeachIWorship
This is just a model but the real thing is also badass
jansenart
The turtles fucking was better. This is close though.
plainoldfool
Maybe they were lovers and not fighters... http://pbfcomics.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/onetimething.png

Saw that post too, I believe I commented about this fossil as well

Fight to the death? Or loving embrace? The world may never know.

Velociraptors never got that big through. The movies made them bigger for the scares. They were only the size of a cat.
BlueskydragonFX
The raptors were based on the Deinonychus. But they renamed them in the movie because Velociraptor sounds better then Deinonychus.
Raptor65
Also when the book was written Deinonychus was considered synonymous with Velociraptor, that's probably where Crichton got it.
HerpestonMcDerping
*turkey, quite a bit larger than a cat.
JuliusPepperwoodFromChicago
Agree. To be fair he didn’t say what kind of cat. Also, cat is an odd choice of animal to use as comparison.
ThePiedPiperofRuination
I'm taking a dinosaur class as an elective and this was used as an example of inferring behavior. According to the professor, it was a 1/2
ThePiedPiperofRuination
Young Protoceratops. This is why it and the Velociraptor are similar in size. 2/2
EnthusiasticPickle
I guess that makes sense
Sauroctonus
Yeah, adult protoceratops were only sheep-sized, so it adds up.
IveSeenYourButthole
Those sets of bones seem way to complete for me
ThePiedPiperofRuination
According to another commenter, what I posted is a model, and the actual bones are less orderly. They should be in the museum link I posted.
IveSeenYourButthole
Thank you for the clarification, cool post too!
thatwoodguy
The tooth on a whale vertebra is a fake
Triatticus
To me it looks more like the megalodon tooth hit the softer interior spot on the bone, hence not breaking the bone
LeviathanOmega
Actually there's a more badass one = Duelling Dinosaurs. The public will likely never get to see it though - but was a juvenille T-Rex 1/2
LeviathanOmega
locked in combat with a Triceratops. Sadly bought by a private collector :( 2/2

Makes me wonder how they both died and were both undisturbed long enough to not only decay, but to be covered and fossilized.
flamingflamingo
The mechanism for both was probably one thing, like a landslide.
ThePiedPiperofRuination
It's thought they got buried by a landslide while the Velociraptor was trying to disembowel the Protoceratops.
floyd007
I remember seeing a CGI re-enactment of this on Discovery
HerpestonMcDerping
That's a model. The real fossil is less...orderly. https://i1.wp.com/www.dinotoyblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/FightVelo-pht-l.jpg

I'd say it's even more amazing (and realistic, knowing what scuffles are like).

I was going to say, there's no way that was real.

It seems to me that if you viewed the real thing from above and not from the side, it would look rather more like the reproduction, though.

Anyway, upvotes for the real deal!
