Well that woke up my PTSD from time working on elevators - That's the kind of thing I used to have nightmares about. Not a common thing in countries with good safety standards.
1) Generates a Murphy field increasing the probability of dropping the phone down the gap, 2) slows your reaction time in case something goes wrong, and worst of all 3) it might inconvenience other people that you almost walk into.
But life is full of stuff that doesn’t always function properly. Yeah, the elevator is supposed to not do that, but you also still have to watch where you’re going and shit.
There's a big difference between "stuff doesn't always function properly" and "the elevator started descending with the door still open." I'd assign no blame to phone guy, I think it is reasonable to expect the elevator in most places to not fail in such a basic way.
I'm not saying it's always the best idea to be on your phone, but seriously, he had every reason to expect safety there and when shit *did* go wrong he reacted correctly.
Elevator is going up, actually. older elevators have relatively no safeguards against this. I've been in two that have slammed against the top. very annoying.
Panic brain, it ain't always gonna make the right decision. You can see this when some people taste ice cream. They might blow on it, because brain goes 'VERY TEMPERATURE, FIX', just like how this guy saw an answer to the imminent problem. Wasn't the -right- answer, but an answer.
That's fair. Thank you for making me reassess. I usually do well in panic mode so probably don't have a reasonable expectation of other people's responses.
Oh for sure, just... it's not foolproof and the US is also not, uh, great for big corps going "hmm what's gonna cost more, a lawsuit or actually fixing shit"
Agreed but I would say it's better here then say hati where the lack of building regulations made it to where none of the buildings had to be typhoon proof. I know people are going to slip through cracks and corporations are going to lobby against punishment but I still think we should be pushing for more building codes.
I like how the Final Destination series managed to cover almost every one of my paranoid fears. This was one of the deaths, IIRC. I think it was the second movie, the one with the famous log scene.
A few years back this happened on an elevator in Houston in the Texas Medical center and it took the head right off a Resident Physician in front of several people.

And during a fire? You'd go toward? Lol

nuh thats different, obvious pain would be forward.

It's like watching a mechanic monster eating its prey.

This is why regulations and inspections are important

Good old Russian engineering

It happens in America too. A lady attending my college was cut in half this same way.

I'm in UK and I've never seen a Lift (Elevator) that operates in this way
Tyrann01
Because Russia and the US are two sides of the same "no health & safety" coin.

https://x.com/TopDogLaw/status/1615023577237159936 the numner on the wall starts with 8 which is the Russian international dialing code.

I would counter that it’s only terrifying on level 1. After that, it’s regular-fying.

Why is walking through an elevator on your phone wrong in any way whatsoever?

1) Generates a Murphy field increasing the probability of dropping the phone down the gap, 2) slows your reaction time in case something goes wrong, and worst of all 3) it might inconvenience other people that you almost walk into.
TranquilPotato
I mean yes, but how about the lack of safety features on the elevator. That's my take away from this one
Neednoggle
Sure, but in this case the elevator is overwhelmingly the one at fault.
jtwood
Sure but that elevator is 98% of the blame here. Good lord.
KiddR78
But life is full of stuff that doesn’t always function properly. Yeah, the elevator is supposed to not do that, but you also still have to watch where you’re going and shit.

sevenpastzeero
Shouldn't the elevator check the door is closed before moving?? Wtf?
cbale2000
Likely a mechanical failure
MissingGravitas
Hey, most elevator safety features work at least 9 times out of 10!
Tyrann01
Also typical Russian engineering.

Isn't Carnival Cruise Lines US? Just sayin' they had one of the nastiest elevator accidents I've seen. Don't look that shit up...
thematman92
Regulations don't stop every accident but they enforce penalties when they are followed. Are they perfect? No. Would I rather have them than not? Yes.

Be unfortunate for the guy who just entered the elevator as well. Imagine the trauma of living with that.

iirc there was another person in the elevator and they had to sit there with the top half of the guy’s head until they could be rescued.

Yep.
1eudaemonia
weird that the article focused on the doctor possibly being drunk as if that explains why an elevator decapitated him

Hospital's legal team needed it, so they got it.
