I am just outside of the area where Mars would be occulted by the moon, but it got pretty close.

I'm not sure I understand your question. Occultation in astronomy is the hiding of one celestial body by another.

It comes from the latin occulere, to conceal.

I believe you. I can't find a use of "occult" to mean "occlude" even though I recognize that the words have the same root
