Hi Imgur!
Last time I shared a bit the process of making water in my firefighting game Embr, and I received a ton of amazing feedback (over 230 comments!). Thanks everyone!

The new water is based on this main feedback:
- Look of higher water pressure and more volume of water
- Add option to toggle water spray - wider & lower pressure vs. narrower & higher pressure
- More contrast and variation of the look of the water stream

We’ve been struggling with getting the water stream/spray to feel a little denser and more voluminous like the concept for quite a while. While Unity’s particle system was sufficient to communicate what we wanted to a certain degree, it simply wasn’t enough by itself to get the feeling that this really was a stream or spray of water.

We then worked out a solution that would get us closer to our original concepts. Unity's default particles were the starting point, which we rendered to an off-screen image, post-processed, and blended back afterwards.

For the post-process step, an edge detection effect links the water droplets together and distinguishes them from the background. We also render the "thickness" of the water stream to another image, and change the final color based on that.

Together, these two effects make the particles blend together when they're close (the host stream), but stay distinct when they're far apart (spray splatter.)

We also added the toggling of spray sizes and intensity as a game feature. While it can still use a bit more refinement, I think we’re a lot closer to the feeling of water than the circle particles we used earlier.

See what you think!

EDIT: Thanks again for the feedback & comments! Really thankful! Next time I'll post about our progress on fire. For everyone asking about the game, here's the Steam link in case you want to see more or wishlist to get notified when it’s out: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1062830/Embr/
It means a lot!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Honestly water physics peaked with mario sunshine

Not gonna lie, I love watching CGI movies for water physics, or the snow physics from Frozen. Couldn't care less about the actual movie. lol

looks like trash, and it is also an ad..

Somehow I knew this was going to be a MY GAME post.

this new burning rangers game looks neat, but it needs that dope soundtrack

We’ll make it happen!

I like 2018 the most, though 2019 is good, too. Just more cartoony in style.

I like water physics like the ones in death standing and the new call of duty. This looks like ms paint.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah I think it’s Brave Firefighters that you’re thinking of!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

OMG yeah that's it ! Thank you!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Looks like it would be a great vr game

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

If you have a boner for water physics you should play hydrophobia. Though you might be left disappointed in the game itself.

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 4

Fantastic work, dude. Keep it up!

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yo this reminds me of Rosco McQueen, Firefighter Extreme! Awesome!

Thanks!!

I love how it’s optional to save the victims

Probably should consult the local fire department and add in some real fire fighting techniques.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Yeah we had actually, very enlightening. We still tried to balance between realism and gameplay as well as the whimsical theme of the game.

This isn't "water physics", it's "particle effects".

5 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 4

Yeah fair. It's both, but a lot of the visuals are particles for sure. Thanks!

Looks good but I would made the wider one a large cone instead of a fan

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Ok got it, thanks for the feedback!

Looks great, added to wishlist on steam for when it drops

Thanks so much!

This could legit replace the terrible fire extinguisher CBTs the DoD uses every year.

5 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 4

Ah good ol annual list. Wouldn't complaint with our cyber awareness!

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Omg, so cool! Idk how hard it is, but you should make a version for nintendo switch! Would sell like pancakes!

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That's definitely a goal! We'll need to do some work on the performance optimization front, but I think we'll get there.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nice! Congratulations with a great concept anyways ?

Looks fun. Reminds me of a game in played on SNES, think it was called ignition factor.

5 years ago | Likes 102 Dislikes 4

Kind of reminds me of a 'shooting gallery' type arcade game from a while back where you played as a firefighter.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I remember that one. I believe they called it Brave Firefighters. Was a unique experience.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Taught an important less that I feel is missing from the gameplay video above. Start at the bottom and work your way up.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Man, the nostalgia, thanks for the flashback memories

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You could almost call it a remix to ignition, Hot and fresh out the kitchen.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks a lot!

5 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

This looks fun, where can i try it?

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Oh thanks! It's still in the works. Let me give you the Steam page for you to check out: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1062830/Embr/

thank you...

Have you ever played a game called Fireman on the super nintendo. https://youtu.be/ZjKsn7k2xg8?t=1095

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I haven't! I'll check it out. I got a lot of the inspiration from Brave Firefighters, an old Sega arcade. That was a really good game too.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

you really should, i believe it may be of great interest to you

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Awesome, thanks a lot!

You should buy ad space

5 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 14

Imgur: I fucking hate ads! Also Imgur: Oh here let me just upvote this blatant fucking ad.

5 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 7

I see so many more of these posts than the actual ads now.

5 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 5

Indie devs do a great service to the gaming community mostly just because it's their passion. I'm cool with it.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 12

I don't care. It's an ad. Do you wanna see ads for the things I like every 5 minutes?

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

No, but that might just be because you seem like a twat

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

Haha. Lap up your ads like a good boy.

I like both the effects of the fire and the water separately, but together It looks like the fire could use some chub too.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah definitely. We'll do another pass on the fire as well.
