Depends what you want to do with your computer. Run a server that is super stable and will go for years without needing any tinkering? Debian. Want to deploy a million workstations and have enterprise quality support? Fedora. Want a super lightweight desktop for a low-spec machine? Void. Want to rice your DE and watch anime? Arch.
That's four with plausible selling points, but there are *so* many more than that. Hundreds of extant ones, probably a thousand if you include abandoned ones. That's not even counting BSD. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_distributions - Now, this gives a brief summary of what each is for, sure. It's just hard to imagine that you couldn't easily do most of these tasks on one of the more popular distros more easily than maintaining an entire, separate distro.
We could get by with a handful of each, but people want a piece of the market to make money off of them, so they compete with very similar vehicles. In contrast, most Linux distros are not sold. (I'm not sure any are, but some have enterprise support available.)

I don't get it, but I'm sure some of you do, so I'm going to +1 for them!

Not linux at, and to large to fit a common meme

Why are there so damn many of them, though? Seems like every kid and his dog wants to make their own distro.

Cars, houses, clothes and TV shows too. Why can't we just all use the same?
