Before we bought our house in September 2022, we had this idea to make a permeable wall into our windowless office. We didn't cut the first hole until the end of August 2023.

We work from home and have great light in the living room, so working in a dark office really sucked. For a while we just put up plastic to keep the dust from the computers and that was a huge improvement. But there was still lots of work to do.

We took all the drywall down and cleaned up the studs.

Then added depth into the office with 2x6s to make space for reasonably deep shelves. I had no idea how long this project was going to take to complete. I definitely started collecting things to go in the shelves about this this... Which was approximately December 2023...

I had to move an electrical run from the middle of the wall and decided corks and wood glue were a great way to plug the old holes through the studs.

I think we were mudding and sanding here. We wanted to make the pieces seamless .... Or, well... Less obviously seamed.

Into another holding pattern, but now with white paint!

First paint pass on the office side.

Testing accent wall color before putting up trim. I didn't have the energy to get out scaffolding to paint the whole wall... That came later.

Trim installed!!

High gloss white paint makes it look pretty good in the office.

Then, December of 2024, we got out the scaffolding!

Loving the new colors. Rhylan loving the fireplace and new reading lamp.

And then, today!!, our friend, John the woodworker, installed custom maple shelves for us!! If you'd like to see his normal work, check out their Etsy store: https://www.etsy.com/shop/MtnCraftsmenCO

We're thrilled to have light in our office and an art gallery in our wall. Big thanks to John and Jon, who both helped get pieces done at crucial points. We LOVE It!!!

Is that a Matthews fan in the office? I love mine!
leashley
Nope, but it's a pretty good knock-off. 😁

Everything looks good, but that glory hole is way too fucking high.
leashley
Agreed. The other one was way too low so we just gave up and cut a big hole.

That's nice! Also a lot of fragile things to knock over... how do your cats feel about them?

We know how much enrichment Bengals need (we've gotten 2 kittens during this project) and they're great about not getting into things... So far.
