I save most things to my desktop to deal with later, and occasionally the icon won't show up for maybe five minutes, and then I'm frantically searching and re-saving the damn thing, wondering if I'm losing my mind.

At least in the most current version. In older versions it can be found in
C:\Users\Your_username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word

Autosave only happens once you've saved it once. Otherwise, if it's just "opened" from a browser or email, it's in your temp folder.
