Also, an early draft had them using a refrigerator as a time machine instead, and ending up at the atom bomb test, and surviving the blast inside (might sound familiar if you saw Kingdom of the crystal skull)

That's not what I heard. I guess I would have to find a source but I heard at this point in the story Doc has already exhausted his family fortune building the time machine and he uses Marty to sell porn bootlegs to other high school students
