" Because of the delicate nature of this procedure, replacement of mouse balls should only be attempted by properly trained personnel." ... Seriously? You remove the ball cover, take the old ball out (if there is one), optionally clean the gunk off the rollers with tweezers (those things got nasty, which could cause issues), stick the new ball in the socket, and replace the cover. It wasn't exactly rocket surgery...
People used to steal them from school to use as ammo in pipe guns. You get some pvc pipe, cut the finger off a rubber glove, tape it over the end of the pipe, and pop the mouse ball in the other end. Grab the ball through the finger and stretch back. Release to launch. It's not devastating. But as a bit of juvenile mischief they were good fun.

It was a pain, but it was made better by having a tasty treat to eat with the week old ball.

I still go to NewEgg for computer parts, even though their hard boiled eggs are no longer needed for our computer mice.

fresh? no no, fresh too soft. Maybe fine for regular people, but us l33t hax0rs need the right hardness.

My school glued that shut because students kept taking the ball out. So none of them worked after a while because they can't be cleaned.

Mouse balls are now available as FRU. Therefore, if a mouse fails to operate or should it perform erratically, it may need a ball replacement. [...] https://www.neystadt.org/john/humor/IBM-Mouse-Balls.htm

That was a lot easier to deal with than collecting the boba from small rodents for your milk tea.

My family had a large amount of money when I was growing up, we used it to buy Lance Armstrong’s testicle. I used that as a mouse ball for 4 years.

Did you get LiveStrong wrist band as well? Useful for holding a couple of 3.5" floppies together
PeaceOnEarthGoodPornToAll
Yes! Kept my MS DOS 5 disks in one.

And all along, that ball was, in fact, Gary Oldman.

No no no...it was John Malkovich

That's how good an actor he is.

At first I read that as "Stretch Armstrong" for some reason and became concerned about what kind of toy store you went to as a kid.
PeaceOnEarthGoodPornToAll
Sears! They sold Stretch Armstrong and Stretch Ballslong.

Before I say anything, phrasing those balls were fun & occasionally bouncy. But it hurt if you used them too much.

The gunk on the rollers did a good enough job.

I still have an old school one that's got a serial lug kicking around. And I also have a USB powered one, It's very slow to respond.

Dint open the image and wasn't sure if I was seeing an egotistical yoke hard boiled or a mouse. Pleasantly it was both. Hard boiled eggs sound good.

I just cleaned my old ball. You rich people, you.
