Firefox users are "no longer supported" by Best Buy if they have a Firefox privacy setting enabled.

Enabling the "privacy.resistFingerprinting" setting can make browsing the web safer by limiting how well sites can track you across the web.

Read more about the setting and how to enable it: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-protection-against-fingerprinting

It's clear that Best Buy is doing a horrible job of detecting if a browser is supported. My user agent is correctly communicating that I have the latest (as of this writing) version of Firefox - but this is not enough to convince Best Buy I'm worthy of viewing their cutting-edge website.

Do better, Best Buy engineers!

Honestly, I do not understand how Best Buy even exists in 2023.

Best Buy is a sinking ship. I have zero interest in their goods.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yet another reason not to buy from them.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Lots of sites block you for using any type of blocker these days. Especially clickbait sites. I wonder why?

2 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Don't know what @OP is saying but I have Firefox, strict privacy settings enable and VPN. I can go on Bestbuy fine.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Literally says experimental in the documentation. And you're complaining it doesn't work?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

BestBuy still exists?

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Oh, this has nothing to do with the competence of any software engineer or website designer. It is 100% intentional and malevolent. BestBuy is a leech. If it can't feed off of you, it doesn't want you around.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Fuck Best Buy.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

There are a few sites I can't browse when using VPN. Best buy, home Depot, Lowe's. It's fucking weird.

2 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

That’s an immediate close tab for me. I ain’t researching a hack so I can buy from these losers

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

"rv:11" in your user agent invites confusion with Internet Explorer 11, a horribly obsolete browser. https://news.slashdot.org/story/23/01/01/2037227/firefox-changes-its-user-agent---because-of-internet-explorer-11

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This only happens with the privacy setting enabled. My user agent without the setting enabled is "Your user agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:109.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/111.0"

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Go here to see what's reported for both setting enabled and disabled. https://bowser-js.github.io/bowser-online/. If it reports as IE11 then they have every reason to block you. Submit a bug report to Firefox for them to fix the experimental feature if so.

I'm fine to take that hint. Bye guys!

2 years ago | Likes 78 Dislikes 0

Why are ppl going to best buy com?

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

If there's something I want to buy same day I've used the site to see if my local store has it in stock.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have made a point of NOT buying ANYTHING from Best Buy, ever since I brought in a digital camera to be repaired, and the clerk told me with a straight face that they've never even sold that model.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

A lot of sites check the browser version number and use an active check (is it this number), rather than a passive check (is it greater than this number). It may just be that the site hasn't been updated for the browser version number, rather than anything nefarious.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just so we are clear: YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO SUPPORT ANY BROWSERS EVER. The browsers are based on protocols and standards. Support those.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but the statement is a lie. They *do* support that browser, they don't support privacy features that limit their ability to sell your info and such.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You should see the web and software issues of Pixel phones...errors("intentions") like this are common. I even had to remind my teacher for the 3rd time to release the writing prompt last weekend on time and now it's due next week since he doesn't want to do his job.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The fuck shops at Best Buy anymore??

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

People with no idea what they want and no idea how to research it. And thieves.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

not at all. I'm in IT. They have plenty of good tech at best buy. But way to be super edgy.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I was talking about the customers who go to Best Buy to get advice. e.g., "I wanna get a computer. What do you recommend?" But thanks for being rude.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have for a fridge on a Black Friday deal. Was a great fridge but left it at my old house because i didn't want to move it. Would have had to take the fridge door handles off and unpin the hinges on the front door to the house to get it out. I know because i had to do that to get it in. And i was moving into an apartment at the time so would have just been in storage before i got this house.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well, thanks for preventing people from giving you money and their information I guess

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Like all those 'We see you're using an Ad-Blocker...', Yup, and I'm not turning it off...

2 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Having worked for Best Buy I can confidently say they overprice nearly everything and you can go elsewhere for a better deal

2 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

I go there when I can get a price match because at least, unlike Walmart & Amazon, I know I'm not getting a knockoff product.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean, only thing I buy there is video games, can't really overprice that. And they're typically matching any deals any other sites have plus some of their own.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ye, pretty much only time I shop at Best Buy is when I absolutely cannot wait for something to be shipped.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They price match though, I've gone in and showed them the lower price of a mouse on Amazon so I could get the Amazon price without waiting for shipping.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Having worked at a few big box stores and manager of a few others. Unless you're a Walmart you can find your shit way cheaper online and usually with free shipping over x amount.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I stopped a BB employee from selling an old man an $80 HDMI cable back when HDMI was new-ish. Was one of those gold tipped, argon filled ones (the same tricks they started doing to analog cables to increase picture quality/price). "It's a digital signal, there's no difference between that one and this $20 cable. Have a nice day." Old man looked happy, BB employee... not so much.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

best buy doesnt work on commission so i why dont i believe you

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Youve never had a bootlicker for a coworker? Weird. Wait i know what that means!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

They don't get commission, but they have "performance goals" they're expected to meet and some stores give bonuses based on how well the store does. Also could have been some employee sales competition the store was doing. That location was constantly pushing different employee incentive gimmicks back then.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Well, time to shop elsewhere…

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

*raises hand* Who is still shopping at Best buy and why?

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Because they gave me a $2000 credit card w/12 mos 0% APR & I needed a Win10 laptop that had more oomph than a lemon-powered potato.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Lots of people line up for graphics cards and PS5's too. Stuff that is hard to come by, even with online shopping. The local store tweets when they get new inventory and then there's a line the next morning before they even open. They run out of stock before they make it through the whole line. Other than that, seems like a lot of people who don't know how to research what to get, and people who stole someone's credit card.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They're right next to me so it's convenient for returns. I hate giving Amazon money when possible. I needed a replacement heatsink within hours. They were the only place that had the TV stand I needed and at a good price. They also had a killer post-Superbowl TV sale and delivered at no charge (I don't have a huge truck so...). Are they my primary go-to? Not really, no. But it's pretty helpful to have them as an option.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

For things I want same day I go there. They're good about price matching so you usually won't pay more. Also their protection plan has saved me quite a bit of money on several mice, headphones, and even an electric kettle that all broke within 2 years. So I still see benefits of shopping there.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Mostly cause I prefer to not give my money to Amazon when I can when I buy my video games. And aside from Amazon they typically have the best prices on any particular games.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The BestBuy-specific WD Easystore external hard drives are still recommended pretty heavily by /r/DataHoarder because they usually go on sale more frequently and for cheaper than their Elements equivalents.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Costco also had really good seasonal discounts on 8tb models. I've scored a couple of those for ~95usd a pop a while back.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can confirm, easystore HDDs are the only things I've bought at Best Buy for a decade or more. The goal price point is under $15/TB

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I just read the doc you listed. It's an experimental feature that has "use at own risk" caveats. BestBuy has no obligation to make their site work on something that doesn't have finalized specs.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

What reason would O ever have to visit Best Buy's website anyway?

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I just go to the store. Although rarely

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Bye bye bitch. Ain't shopping there, even if you pull your stupid update from the loss of sales.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have privacy.resistFingerprinting enabled, and I'll be damned if a website like bestbuy is gonna get me to disable it.

2 years ago | Likes 649 Dislikes 1

I have that setting disabled because many of my work sites break because of it :(

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

For real. I'd rather pay more elsewhere (a difficult feat to accomplish) than spend the time turning that off for Best Buy.

2 years ago | Likes 77 Dislikes 1

.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I also recommend Brave Browser. Better than FF imo.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

if I set privacy.resistFingerprinting, I'll forget immediately and never know how to set it back if I need to. Hence this comment

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Chrome users, check out Random User-Agent, I have it switch up my fingerprint every 30 mins. Fuck em, I'm a Mac running OS2/Warp and Dolphin

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

What... what does a GameCube emulator have to do with internet privacy...?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There is a browser called that too.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not really an F U if you give them your business

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The FU is to sites trying to track you through browser fingerprinting

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh no, it’d be a shame if I couldn’t buy from Best Buy anymore. *makes hand jacking motion

2 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 0

Only reason to buy from best buy for me is its the only source of computer hardware at MSRP sometimes. I refuse to pay scalping prices.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Theres some insane price gouging going on at MSRP regardless.Priced out a generator/welder. July 2020 out the door for $4,800. Today $8700.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Do you get the same issue on Bestbuy? if you dont, then its not bestbuy and not that setting

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just checked, and yeah I do have the same issue.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

if you're smart enough to do that then you're smart enough to not buy at bestbuy.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I feel dumb for asking, but how do you enable that? Is it an addon like Adblocker Ultimate?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"no longer supported" = "we don't want you browsing safely"

2 years ago | Likes 441 Dislikes 2

You are ascribing to malice what much more plausibly could be incompetence.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 9

Does it matter? If they are *that* incompetent at running a website, I'd rather not gamble my personal info with them anyway.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If it doesn't matter why not accept the stated "no longer supported"?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

As OP stated, he has the latest version of Firefox, which is one of the browsers the message recommends. Ergo, they are lying.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or “we can’t leech enough data, come back when we can”

2 years ago | Likes 81 Dislikes 0

I've had the same problem with VPN... I understand the streaming services begrudgingly but forums, shopping... No.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

"If you are not paying for the product you are the product".. oh wait... It annoys me SOOO much that you are paying full price for something and they are milking even more by selling your data without you knowingly consent to that...

2 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

Like subscription services for my OS or wordprocessors. Office, adobe (I don’t use that one), season passes for games. I fucking hate this capitalist system.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A lot of that was "We don't know how to handle this legally so we've decided not to let you in" really CYA.l approach. Besides only darn fur'ners, so no real loss of revenue

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

reminds me of all the websites that said "due to the GDPR censorship in the EU we can't talk to you anymore! you need to complain about the GDPR that censors websites!" - when really all it said was "if a website wants to sell your personal information, they have to tell you about it first" and that was too much for those websites..

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Hey can you click through like 10 buttons if you don't want us selling your very private and identifiable data? Unless you're in the US, then all you get is an agree option.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

iirc part of GDPR required them to default all those questions to the more private option. (the main button can still be 'agree to everything', but if you go for 'details' or whatever they call it, the individual selections need to default to private).

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There are plugins that have a 'reject all' button and/or a 'only accept basic functionality cookies) but nowhere near all websites are up to snuff.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

K. I'll shop elsewhere like Newegg or CyberPowerPc.

2 years ago | Likes 311 Dislikes 5

This is the correct response to bad business practices.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

CyberPowerPC has been my goto for the last 3 comps. Really worth it. Couldn't avoid Win11 in the latest one though.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Was Best Buy ever the “Best” place to shop for anything anyway? I can’t count the times I’ve found a good deal there—because it’s impossible to count to 0.

2 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 1

IIRC, they were pretty good too their employees during the pandemic.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They are often the one of the few sources of computer hardware at MSRP when there are shortages.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I tried to get a new dishwasher from the local guy. They were backordered for over a month (pre-'rona) and Best Buy could get me the model I wanted installed in two days for $20 cheaper. I was willing to pay extra to support the local shop, but not wait since mine was DEAD.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's one of the few brick and mortars within like 200 miles of me that sells electronics. I don't like buying tvs sight unsee, and they price match so short of a Costco deal, they're going to be no worse to buy from.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If you're old like me you would watch for their paper ads and compare to circuit city and compUSA

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Going into compUSA to see the new gpu running 3dMark on display. We're ancient...

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I am a poor-ish person. Upgraded from 1060 to 4070ti ASUS TUF OC it was on sale at best buy for $714.99 normally $850 and I’m not mad about it. Couldn’t afford to go $1200 for the 4080 and couldn’t find anything lower tier for a better price.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I didn’t think I was “poor-ish” but I could never spend even $700 on a single PC component. My whole build was under $800. I’m rocking a 1660 Super right now and honestly it does what I need since I only have a 1080p monitor anyway. I used a variety of websites from Tiger Direct to Newegg and Amazon to put together a reasonable PC.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean who the hell is buying computer parts at Best buy? TV or appliances or random electronic stuff is all I've ever bought there. PC stuff selection is garbage and half is crap quality.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

need to be careful buying online from bestbuy, a lot of the "best deals" are refurbished units bought from scraped websites instantly when you purchase.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I don't ever but refurbished anything from anywhere, well maybe a flea market or yard sale but not electronics. My fridge was still in the Samsung branded box.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If I need a new PSU or SSD *now*, it'll do. Otherwise waiting for shipping is fine.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

It's crazy how touchy the people on this site are. Good luck finding a perfectly ethical company that meets your ivory tower expectations.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 15

Holy shit why did you get downvoted for this? Newegg was bought out a *while* ago, friends. Good luck with their nonexistent quality control.

2 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 0

Yep, I made my last Egg purchase many years ago. They used to be of legend and now it’s all discount code bullshit that works on six useless products for ten hours a day.

2 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

This. They were my go to company for a while, but a sold soul leaves only an empty husk.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

cyberpower definitely isn't either if you're buying actual computers

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've bought like 10 pc's from them and never had an issue.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've bought multiple high end machines from them with no issues. Not saying you're wrong but just curious what your experience was
