Brain facts

I grew up with an ADHD diagnosis. So I had an IEP since about 2nd grade to make sure I got accommodations here and there to allow me to keep up in school. Part of that involved the schools having me tested periodically to see if I still actually needed help, etc. At one point in high school they had me take a proctored IQ test, then they called my parents in for a meeting about the results and made a big deal about how the test showed I was literally 2 points shy of "genius".

Thing about that is, I was TERRIBLE at math in school. I cannot stress enough just how bad I was at math. We're talking summer school just for math courses and having to repeat pre-algebra a ridiculous number of times. (I eventually became decent at it later in my college education after getting into a class with a teacher that was really good at teaching it though.)

So people would constantly ride me in high school with crap like, "why aren't you getting this math stuff when the tests say you're so smart?"

Besides all the other stuff people have stated, in reality, data stored on drives can degrade over time as well. Optical discs rot, data bit rot, magnetic fields, and all sorts of other issues. There are problems associated with all forms of storage media for computers. Also, most computers use volatile memory for doing work. That gets cleared on a power down.
