My Breadboard Hack

I peel a couple bits of the backing off and install a screw on each side which connects the four rails. The screw hole is already there. Then I put a couple pieces of tape over the screws and use a blue and red Sharpie to recolor the top. This configuration suits me well.

I've personally never encountered a breadboard with split power lines. I mean I always hear about them, but I've never actually seen one.

I prefer having +ve and -ve rails on both sides of the breadboard, personally.

I just use some little wire jumpers to bridge that gap in the middle, like this: http://imgur.com/nyFrQSK
