He's getting brown on one side and it looks like he's eating himself.

Or rotting away? I looked it up a bit and I guess it can be any number of things. Including to much water.

I opened up the bottom of his pot and drained it better. I'm hoping that's all it is but if some one has a better idea of what's going on. And a way to fix it. That would be appreciated. He has been the runt since I got him and hasn't grown much the whole time. And now this is happening. I just would like for him not to die.

It might be a fungus. Crested cacti in particular can be susceptible to that. Your best bet is to remove dry, dead matter and water it with a systemic antifungal. Also looks like it could use nitrogen. How are the roots?

I’m not super with cacti, but in case @OP isn’t either I wanted to tack on what I do know… if you decide to fertilize, use an NPK fertilizer that is balanced in N and K, and very low numbers and amounts. They grow slowly so only use a wee tiny bit at a time.

Ty. That's very helpful. I'll make sure to keep that in mind.

Also I forgot to mention, since it's on one side, it might be sunburn. Thin crested cacti in particular can get cooked easily.

Havnt checked the roots but was thinking I might have to remove the effected area and repot it so I'll def check the roots when I do. Ty for the advice. I'll have to look up where to get that stuff in my area.

The stuff I use is called bonide 148. Also, the cactus is in a bit of a deep pot, and the drip tray attached to it is making it drain worse. Something more shallow would help water drain and evaporate faster (think bonsai pot). Source: learned it the hard way lol

Daaaang. Good tip. Tyvm. I will def sort that out.
