My favorite JRPG, hands down. Amazing story, beautiful soundtrack, gorgeous pixel art, it stands the test of time (pun intended).
Released in 1995, made as a collaboration between the creators of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger is considered by many to be the best RPG of it's generation.

Coincidentally, that's how many different endings there are. While it wasn't the first video game to have multiple proper endings, it was the first that I played. It blew my mind as a kid.

You definitely should give it a try. It fairly effectively sidesteps at least some of the trappings and tropes which weigh down other JRPGs of its era.
It’s literally the only JRPG I would go back and play through again (in a heartbeat no less), and I’ve played quite a few of them over the years.
