I don't know why the builder thought every cable in the house should be run into this one enclosure.

First attempt. Purchased a small rack and some unifi gear. Got overzealous to install and hard wired myself out of closing the panel door. /facepalm

Cut a hole in the drywall right behind the cutout to route cables directly into the rack.

I was happy to get the cat6 cables out of there to get some breathing room... But then I got bothered by the messy lower panel.

Cleaned up the organization inside the panel. Left the ISP equipment in the panel in case it needs to be serviced so they don't touch my gear on the rack.

Only used items I had on hand. So it's not perfect, but I'm still very happy with the result!

Looks much better. Feels great to be able to shut it all out of sight. The UPS is louder than I expected, but a decent trade off to avoid ally stuff rebooting.

Sir, you need to mark this as NSFW as this is basically porn.

For a moment it didn't all load and I thought that first picture was your "cleaned up" network, it irritated me more than it should.

My builder did this and I had to redo it all just to close the panel door. It looked exactly like your first pic.

When I saw the first rework, I was like... yikes. But by the end, you really did do a quality job. I've had to do this to SOOO many closets.

Isn’t WiFi replacing wires?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nope. I run a media server at home. It gets 900Mbps u/d which can't be achieved with wireless.

Awesome job…I work for your isp. Have them send you at least a 210 router that ones way old. If your not using its WiFi no issue, if you

WiFi…not wife… good lord

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You must be a mind reader. I was just looking at structured media cabinets in prep for next house. What size is that cabinet? Looks great!

Also, that cloud key gen 2+ just hanging out in the tangle causes me much concern. Glad to see it safely secured now!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The rack is 8U. Startech "WALLMOUNT8"

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The Legrand enclosures are a bit janky. Check out Primex ones. So much better.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, this one was supplied by the builder

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah understandable. Seeing more and more builders opt for Primex though. Legrand is fine.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What are the main differences? I definitely want a box that supports multiple branded accessories for my next install.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Primex ones close and lock better. Don’t have the rounded edges as well so hold components better. Lid is stronger.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nice rack @op!

My eyes are up here, buddy.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That is some NICE work. I used to tell my cabling guys, "If you can't close the door, you're not done."

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

God, I hate those residential boxes. I've had to do something similar at least a half dozen times for clients.

I just wired my house a few months ago. I only got the UDM and an AP but I love it.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Running the USG, 4 switches, and 3 AP's here, never was managing all of that this easy, same goes for upgrading all the devices.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ubiquiti is Amazeballs. I have 2 APs and a router and MAN they be zoomin :D

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Aye, running the controller on a raspberry pi and have it set to the old/classic UI because the new one is to broken to use

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Did you get a punch-down board or did you use keystones?

4 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Always go keystones

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I did punch down first. But then when I had to reroute all the cables (and start over), i swapped to keystones.

4 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 1

That's exactly why I asked. I cannot stand trying to re punch down a board. Popping out a stone is so much easier.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I like that a normal patch panel is generally more durable. On the other hand, if one port or it's punch terminals go bad, you're screwed.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yup. Tried to save a few bucks and it cost me more in the long run. Gives flexibility too to keep my grouping/color-coding intact.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It always costs more in the long run.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What are keystones?

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That’s a keystone. You punch down the individual Ethernet cable wires into he 8 slots.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Awesome work. Is that for a hime or office?

4 years ago | Likes 320 Dislikes 2

Wait you're choosing to install smart devices?

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Choosing to relocate them. Have a Hubitat, Philips Hue Hub, and a Lutron Pro hub stashed in my wife's office that she wants gone. :P

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Most people are working from hime nowadays.

4 years ago | Likes 230 Dislikes 1

Be careful with smart homes. Most of them are insanely easy to track and exploit

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How many Ethernet ports you have in every room. That is a lot of cables for one house.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

He didn't ask about your house. He asked about your hime.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As a dude with a 25U rack owning my living room, I wish the UK had wired up for ethernet. It's a pain. Wires everywhere!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Even a lot of newer places in the US don't have ethernet. I've helped a bunch of people pull wire, it's not that hard to install later.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That’s impressive. I just have a simple wifi unit on the tv stand.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

What kind of server? My homelab dell R820 would absolutely never fit in a space like that lol.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's a custom Plex server build in a tower (houses ~ 50TB of data). There's a wall plate near the floor that runs 2 cables along with audio.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah I'm gonna need pics please. That sounds delicious. Mine is a 2U 36" rack server.

The whole house is wired for cat6: theater room, living room, 3 bedrooms, loft, 2 home offices, kitchen, outside, WAPs, and PoE cameras.

4 years ago | Likes 76 Dislikes 3

Had to google most of that hahaha thanks.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Oh, you’re rich

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Don't be silly; my name is not Rich!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I presume you had to request all that in the build, yes?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I added some lines (to every room and for cameras), but the WAP lines, loft, theater, study, and living rooms were standard.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You got WAPs? Do you live with Nicki Minaj??
