I've connected my iPhone to my TP-Link AC 1750's usb port with the hotspot on my phone turned on, but it's not working. My phone recognizes it's connected to it because it's charging it, but doesn't seem to pass the hotspot's internet connection off to the router. Any ideas?

get a router with WWAN sim card slot.

Solution: Most routers are not built to connect to a phones hotspot. (I don't know of one that would do that.) On the other hand, there is a way to jury rig it, but it requires a computer. You connect the computer to the phones hotspot, turn on network sharing on the computer, and then plug in the network cable rj-45 to the router (ADSL port).

As far as I know, you can tether an laptop over USB because the laptop has the drivers to make it work. I don’t think you can do it with a router. One way to do what you’re attempting to do is create a wireless bridge (Computer -> WiFi 1 -> Router - WiFi 2 -> Phone). But I haven’t tried it. This guide from TP link might help you get there. Replace “root router” with “phone.” https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/1555/ (I’ve done something similar, but had to put DD-WRT on the extended router.)

RTFM? -- On most routers that port is intended as a way to plug in storage, not to provide internet connections.

Is there a way I can do what I'm trying to do with this router?

you don't need the router, devices can connect to the hot spot on your phone all on their own. Set a password for the SSID the phone broadcasts.

I'm trying to run a game server and need certain ports open, which the hotspot cannot do.
cuttysark
By default, ports are all open on a phone when using the hotspot feature. Or do you mean you need port forwarding for the game server?
mcoulter876
I need to port forward

That is an interesting thing to do from a mobile hotspot. I've only ever used one when my regular connection goes down. You want for the cell phone to be the WAN connection to the wifi router. I've never used this but a quick google search identifies an app called “every proxy”

The USB port on routers generally isn't for that. As I understand it, that model allows you to plug in a storage device and share it locally

Darn. Is there a way I can do what I'm trying to do with this router?

Not that I know of. I'm not sure why you'd bother - just use the local wifi connection.

I'm trying to create a game server and I can't create ports on a phone's hotspot, hence the use of a router. I also have an Archer AX1450.

I can't help thinking a phone isn't really the thing to use.

It's all I have. I live out in the sticks.
